Only a handful of movies have achieved a score of 90 percent or higher on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s far more common to find films that reached 80 percent or lower.
That only makes the films that achieve that score stand out from the crowded lineup of movies streaming on Netflix.
Among the new-to-Netflix films in July 2025, the Watch With Us team has selected three new Netflix movies with a 90 percent or higher score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This month’s selections include a reality-based thriller, a star-crossed musical romance and an action film we never get tired of watching.
‘Captain Phillips’ (2015)
Rotten Tomatoes score: 93 percent
Tom Hanks has made a lot of movies, but few as harrowing as Captain Phillips. This film is based on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips, a merchant mariner who was in command of the MV Maersk Alabama in 2009. As the ship enters dangerous waters, it comes under attack by Somali pirates.
Although most of the crew can retreat deeper inside the ship, Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi) and the other pirates successfully capture Phillips and the vessel itself. While the crew attempts to reclaim their ship, it’s all Phillips can do to keep the pirates from murdering him or any of his men.

‘A Star Is Born’ (2018)
Rotten Tomatoes score: 90 percent
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga had out-of-this-world chemistry in A Star Is Born, and some fans have been shipping them ever since. Cooper plays Jack Maine, a country music superstar whose career is coming apart because of his drug and alcohol addictions. But his life gets a jolt of energy when he discovers Ally Campana (Gaga), a singer with untapped potential.
As Jack and Ally fall in love, her talent carries her to the top of the music scene while his own profile fades. That puts a serious strain on their relationship as Ally tries to help Jack save himself from his vices.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015)
Rotten Tomatoes score: 97 percent
At age 70, director George Miller dropped one of the best action movies ever made like it was no big deal. Miller has helmed every film in the Mad Max franchise since it started in 1979, but Mad Max: Fury Road stands as the best in the series to date. Tom Hardy takes over the role of Mad Max from Mel Gibson, and he’s matched up well here with Charlize Theron‘s Imperator Furiosa.
Much like their respective performers in real life, Max and Furiosa take an instant dislike for each other. But they also need each other to survive the wrath of a warlord named Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and his warriors. Furiosa betrayed Joe by helping his harem of wives to escape, and whether she wants to admit it or not, she can’t save them without Max’s help.
