Action movie fans never seem to be without something fun to watch on the various streamers. Sometimes, Netflix even surprises action lovers with an unexpected low-budget flick that becomes the most popular movie on the streamer.
But those are the action films we can’t predict because we haven’t seen them. In order to pick out the unheralded flicks, they have to be movies we’ve actually watched.
That’s why the Watch With Us team’s choices for the three underrated action movies you should watch in June are films we’ve seen when they were new in theaters.
These are the action movies we can vouch for, and all three are headlined by Hollywood legends.
‘The Last Witch Hunter’ (2015)
Vin Diesel actually created his own character in The Last Witch Hunter for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign before bringing his creation to the big screen. In the present, Kaulder (Diesel) has lived for over eight centuries while maintaining the fragile peace between humans and witches. His only ally is a priest called Dolan (Michael Caine) who plans to pass on the mantle to his successor (Elijah Wood).
When the elder Dolan is murdered, Kaulder and the younger Dolan turn to Chloe (Rose Leslie), a witch who may be able to uncover some answers. Kaulder suspects that his death and resurrection at the hands of the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht) may shed some light on the current threat. But the fate of humanity may hinge upon whether Kaulder is willing to lay down his own life to make sure the Witch Queen stays dead.
The Last Witch Hunter will stream on Netflix on June 16.
‘Ronin’ (1998)
Would you believe Robert De Niro as an action star at 54 years old? He’s very convincing in his role as Sam, a former CIA operative turned mercenary in Ronin. This was one of the last films by legendary director John Frankenheimer, and the movie’s car chases are particularly realistic and impressive.
Sam is just one of the mercenaries hired by an IRA operative named Deirdre (Natascha McElhone) to steal a briefcase from a heavily armed convoy. Sam takes a liking to Vincent (Jean Reno), but he’s less impressed with his other teammates, including Gregor (Stellan Skarsgård), Spence (Sean Bean) and Larry (Skipp Sudduth). Like clockwork, someone betrays the team to make off with the briefcase themselves. But Sam is a relentless old warrior, and he’s not giving up his payday without a fight.
Ronin is streaming on Prime Video.
‘Cold Pursuit’ (2019)
Cold Pursuit separates itself from other Liam Neeson action thrillers through its lead character, Nels Coxman. Nels is just an ordinary snow plow driver who has been named Citizen of the Year for his small community. He’s not the kind of guy who would even think of killing someone — at least not until his son, Kyle (Micheál Richardson), is murdered.
Nels resolves to avenge his son by targeting the drug boss, Trevor “Viking” Calcote (Tom Bateman), who ordered his death. In part because of his own inexperience with murdering people, Nels inadvertently sparks a war between Viking and his rival, White Bull Legrew (Tom Jackson). As the situation escalates out of control, Nels may not be able to protect himself from the retaliation that follows.
Cold Pursuit is streaming on Hulu.
