Last week, Max started streaming one of the best horror movies of 2025 so far. Companion is a nasty little picture about a female android who exacts revenge against her terrible human owners, but its excessive gore and violence may be too much to handle for some.

Hey, that’s OK! The streamer has plenty of older movies to stream this month. Some of them, like the Kevin Kline comedy The Extra Man, you’ve probably never heard of, but that doesn’t make them any less entertaining.

This list will also include a neglected horror sequel featuring a Friends star and a Seinfeld actor that works better as a comedy. There’s something for everyone at Max, so take advantage of your pricey subscription and stream one or more of the movies below this weekend.

‘The Extra Man’ (2009)

Henry Harrison (Kevin Kline) is a loser who thinks he’s a winner, and he wants to mentor someone who should know better. But Louis Ives (Paul Dano) is troubled and lonely, so when he sublets Henry’s NYC apartment, he allows the older man to teach him how to be an escort to older rich women. Louis is terrible at it, but he’s good at listening to Henry, and together, the two men begin an odd friendship that will change their lives forever.

The comedy lineup on HBO and Max is a film lover’s delight because its library of movies goes back decades into the past. Most of the other streamers don’t have many movies made before 1980. That’s why it’s so refreshing to have the option to go back even further. Watch With Us’ selections for the […]

Not a lot happens in The Extra Man, but the plot isn’t the point; instead, it’s watching these two characters slowly warm to each other. Kline’s Henry is proud and haughty, but he’s also practical — when he forgets to buy a pair of black socks for a date, he paints them on using shoe polish. The movie makes great use of its NYC setting, and it’s good enough to make you wish there was a sequel that continues the story.

‘Take This Waltz’ (2011)

Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen starred as extramarital lovers in Steven Spielberg’s wonderful 2022 movie The Fabelmans, but 11 years earlier, they portrayed a married couple whose relationship has stalled in Sarah Polley’s marital drama, Take This Waltz. Margot (Williams) loves her husband, Lou (Rogen), but she’s grown bored with him, so when Daniel (Luke Kirby) shows up and ignites a passion within her, she contemplates whether her marriage is worth saving or not.

Take This Waltz takes no sides and gives equal weight to all parties involved in this complicated love triangle. As Lou, Rogen is quiet and a bit dorky, and you understand why Margot is devoted to him and fed up with him. The film ends on an ambiguous note and will make you contemplate the intention behind its last shot. Only a good movie can make you think about it after it’s over, and Take This Waltz is that kind of movie.

‘Scream 3’ (2000)

Scream 3 is the bastard child of the successful franchise — it didn’t get respect when it was released 25 (!) years ago, and few are fond of it now. But it’s more fun than you think, and there’s one performer in particular who steals the whole thing.

Ghostface has struck again, this time killing an actress on the set of Stab 3, which is enough to lure Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) out of hiding to investigate. She’s joined by fellow survivors Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette), whose romance is on the rocks. Can the Woodsboro trio save the cast and crew of Stab 3 before they meet the fate of Ghostface’s past victims?

Last weekend, several recent, high-profile movies became available to stream, like Companion on Max, Wolf Man on Peacock and The Room Next Door on Netflix. It was an embarrassment of riches, and that streak will continue this weekend. Watch With Us has selected four new movies that are new to streaming and worth your time. […]

Scream 3 isn’t as scary as the first two, but it’s looser, funnier and has Parker Posey chewing up the scenery as a method actress way too devoted to her role. Her scenes with Cox are hilarious, and anyone who enjoyed her camp performance on The White Lotus season 3 will get a kick out of her here as a delusional starlet. Also funny, and all too brief, is a cameo by Carrie Fisher as an actress who slept with George Lucas to get a plum role in a big sci-fi movie. The role is not autobiographical.
