Aside from the return of You, it’s a very quiet week for original shows on Netflix.

Unless you’re really into horse racing or the inside story of a domestic terrorist attack that happened three decades ago, there aren’t many new documentary options either.

Netflix was bound to have a slow week eventually, so Watch With Us is only picking one current series for this week’s three underrated Netflix shows to watch this weekend.

The series in question are a returning South Korean show, a pirate drama released over a decade ago that’s still great to watch and one of the darker sitcoms in recent history.

Weak Hero, the story of a physically weak but intelligent boy who becomes entangled in escalating violence from high school bullies, has gained an obsessive following since dropping on Netflix. Since it was added to the streamer in late March, the series has become one of Netflix’s most popular shows and even eclipsed Kate Hudson‘s […]

‘Weak Hero’ (2022 – Present)

The name Weak Hero is perhaps a little too literal for Yeon Si-eun (Park Ji-hoon), the lead character of this South Korean series. Si-eun may be physically weak, but his analytical mind, his ability to use his surroundings to his advantage and his fiery temper make him surprisingly capable in a fight. He wasn’t looking to take on the bullies at his school, but doing so has made Si-eun a hero to his classmates and a friend to Ahn Su-ho (Choi Hyun-wook) and Oh Beom-seok (Hong Kyung).

After a three-year hiatus, Weak Hero season 2 picks up with Si-eun at a new school following a disastrous ending at his old one. Without spoiling the events of season 1, Si-eun’s friends are no longer in his life and he’s not looking to go through something that traumatic ever again.

Regardless of his wishes, Si-eun is essentially being forced to start all over again when the bullies at his current school decide that he’s an ideal target. He’s also going to need some new friends and allies because even Si-eun can’t face his latest adversaries by himself.

‘Black Sails’ (2014 – 2017)

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean may have revived interest in pirates, but Black Sails is a decidedly more TV-MA take on the concept.  This show is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island, which is why Long John Silver (Luke Arnold) has such a big role. But most of the focus falls on James Flint (Toby Stephens), a legendary pirate captain who was only mentioned in the novel.

Over the years, Netflix has produced a variety of memorable hit shows like Stranger Things with Millie Bobby Brown, The Queen’s Gambit with Anya Taylor-Joy and House of Cards. Flint has big ambitions of creating a nation for pirates with himself as king, of course. Although Flint is adept at making alliances as needed, he’s just as talented at making enemies as well. Silver only joined Flint’s crew because it was the best option for his survival. But his treachery is inevitable, and he’s not the only one who is willing to stab Flint in the back if he can’t provide his crew and followers with everything he’s promised.

‘A.P. Bio’ (2018 – 2021)

A lot of school-based sitcoms tend to be sentimental stories about teachers bonding with their students. A.P. Bio isn’t one of those shows, and Jack Griffin (Glenn Howerton) has no intention of getting close to the kids in his class. As far as Jack’s concerned, his A.P. Bio class students are only good for helping him plan his revenge on Miles Leonard (Tom Bennett), the man who killed his chances of a career as a professor at Harvard.

Jack is so amoral that Principal Durbin (Patton Oswalt) finds himself in a contest of wills with his newest teacher over control of the school. As for Jack, he’s not looking to take over Durbin’s job at Whitlock High School. He just wants to reclaim what he lost so he can leave, but that’s much easier said than done.
