The United States swept Brazil, 3-0, in the gold medal matchup at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, then lost its 2024 opener to China before rattling off four straight wins to play for gold. The Americans started the elimination stage of the Olympics with a 3-0 sweep of Poland and a 3-2 win over 2020 silver medalist Brazil (25-23, 18-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11) in the semifinals. Kathryn Plummer led the way for the U.S. in that five-set victory with 26 points.

Italy has been dominant without playing a team of the same caliber as the U.S., winning 15 of 16 sets and sweeping four of its five opponents. Most recently, Italy secured the first women’s volleyball medal in the nation’s history by defeating Turkey in three sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) in the semifinal round.
