A fire tore through a Greenwich Village apartment building, leaving an 81-year-old woman dead Wednesday morning, officials said.
The blaze erupted inside the top floor of the five-story building, trapping the elderly resident in the hallway at 142 Waverly Place around 7:20 a.m, the FDNY said.
More than 60 firefighters and medics responded to the scene, where they found the woman dead on the fifth floor.
The FDNY said the fire was put out around 8:32 a.m.
The victim’s grieving daughter wept outside the home, falling into the arms of a firefighter, amNY reported.

Authorities said the cause appears to be electrical.
