Sinkhole opens on 2nd NJ highway as commuting turmoil drags on: ‘This is getting ridiculous’

Same state, different highway hole.

A gaping sinkhole opened up on a different New Jersey highway Friday — just days after a third formed just miles way along Interstate 80 since December and threw Garden State commuting into chaos.

The latest sinkhole opened on the northbound side of Interstate 287 near exit 41B in Parsippany-Troy Hill and shut down three left lanes of traffic as of Friday evening, according to the state’s Department of Transportation.

The swallowed-up roadway appeared on the left shoulder, and officials were investigating, according to NorthJersey.com.

“This is getting ridiculous, and it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or dies as a result of one of these sinkholes,” GOP state Assemblyman Brian Bergen told the outlet.  

“We need swift action by the DOT to fix these issues. Going forward, NJ should spend less money on wackadoodle liberal initiatives and more money on shoring up our vital infrastructure.”

The latest highway headache for Jersey drivers comes as crews work to patch up the new 15-by-15-foot I-80 sinkhole — roughly 10 miles from the I-287 pit — that opened up in a construction zone Wednesday, forcing traffic in all westbound lanes to divert.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is expected to visit Morris County — where the sinkholes have plagued travelers — to meet with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Rep. Thomas Kean about the decimated state highways Saturday, News 12 reported.

I-80, which extends from Teaneck across the country to San Francisco, has dealt with at least three sinkholes in New Jersey since December.

The state closed eastbound lanes on I-80 last month after the second sinkhole developed.
