‘Saltburn’ (2024)

Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) wrote and directed this strange erotic tale of obsession and envy. Shy, middle-class Oxford student Oliver (Barry Keoghan) befriends the wealthy, handsome and popular Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi). When Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer at his family’s estate, “Saltburn,” Oliver quickly entwines himself with every member of the bizarre Catton clan like Felix’s mother, Elspeth (a spectacular Rosamund Pike). As he manipulates, seduces, and intimidates them, his lust for power — and for control over Felix — only grows stronger.

Saltburn is suspenseful, disturbing and captivating, with bold visuals and shocking twists. Keoghan’s performance is unsettlingly powerful, and you’ll leave the movie wondering what the character truly wanted in the first place. (As a bonus, Saltburn brought “Murder on the Dancefloor” back into the mainstream — and we’re all better for it.)

Despite Amazon’s recent habit of being late with its lineup of movies, April has some really intriguing additions to Prime Video’s library. ‘The Menu’ (2022)

Another film that examines the privilege and excesses of the upper class, The Menu stars Ralph Fiennes as Julian Slowik, a celebrity chef who invites a group of rich foodies to an exclusive culinary “experience” on a private island. It’s soon revealed, however, that the chef has much more sinister plans for his guests, all of whom are hiding dark secrets. (Nicholas Hoult, John Leguizamo, and Judith Light are just a few of the standout actors in this despicable ensemble.) Everyone except Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy), who ends up on the guest list at the last minute — and doesn’t quite belong with the other diners.

There are a lot of thrillers on Netflix, and it would take a very long time to watch all of them. Fortunately, Watch With Us has already narrowed down the picks to the must-see thrillers on Netflix. This month’s selections include The Guilty, an unusual thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and an all-star voice cast. Thank […]

Taylor-Joy is fantastic as she tries to understand Slowik’s motives and escape the island alive. The story is full of twists and turns that will horrify you — but it’s all undeniably entertaining. Helmed by Succession director Mark Mylod, The Menu is a sharp, funny thriller that will leave you with an appetite for more.

Blink Twice (2024)

Zoë Kravitz made a strong and shocking directorial debut with this 2024 psychological thriller film starring Naomi Ackie (Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) and Channing Tatum. Ackie and Shawkat play Frida and Jess, two best friends who get invited to party on a private island by tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum). Though the island at first seems like a paradise, Frida begins to notice lapses in her memory and strange behavior from some of her fellow guests.

Blink Twice is psychodrama meets slasher with a horrific twist that will leave you reeling, but Ackie grounds the movie with her stellar performance. Tatum, who usually plays romantic leads or comedic characters, shows off a different side of his talent in this quietly sinister performance. It’s a story about the importance of female solidarity in a man’s world. (And, like every movie on this list, it warns you to stay away from the exclusive private estates of the ultra-wealthy.)
