Sci-fi movies haven’t been as prevalent in theaters this year as superhero or action flicks.

That’s why some of the most intriguing science fiction films of 2025 never saw the inside of a theater at all.

Now that the year is past the halfway point, the Watch With Us team has selected the five best sci-fi movies of 2025 so far.

Out of this list, only No. 5 was a true hit at the box office, which may explain the genre’s absence from theaters. But as long as the streaming services can pick up the slack, then there are still great opportunities to find new sci-fi stories.

Sci-fi fans have a good reason to be happy this June, because it’s not every month that we get a streaming original film that’s worthy of movie theaters. Predator: Killer of Killers may be a direct-to-Hulu animated anthology, but it’s easily one of the best sci-fi movies of 2025. Admittedly, there hasn’t been a lot […]

5. ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ (2025)

Someday, audiences may get tired of the Jurassic World franchise circling back to familiar territory. But not this year, because Jurassic World Rebirth is one of the biggest hits of 2025. Rebirth is largely a reset, with Scarlett Johansson taking the lead as Zora Bennett, a mercenary who is enticed by Bobby Atwater (Ed Skrein) to undertake a mission to the last area on Earth where dinosaurs still survive.

Bobby dresses up the mission as a way to get genetic samples from dinosaurs that could cure heart disease in humans. But he’s so desperate to hide his intentions that he’s willing to let anyone die to maintain their silence. When Zoe’s expedition is stranded on the island with a shipwrecked civilian family, simply surviving won’t be enough to make their return to civilization.

Jurassic World Rebirth is now playing in theaters.

4. ‘The Gorge’ (2025)

The Gorge might be the most romantic sci-fi movie of the year, and the only thing standing in the way of Levi Kane (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) from finding love with each other is an enigmatic gorge filled with monstrous creatures that constantly attempt to escape.

The 2020s are almost half over, but it’s still too soon to determine if this decade will produce any of the best sci-fi movies of all time. That’s not to say that there haven’t been some great science fiction movies in the last five years. The genre seems to be having a resurgence between theatrical […]

Levi and Drasa are respectively American and Russian snipers who have been instructed to guard the secrets of the gorge with their lives. No one said anything about refusing to fraternize with their frenemies on the other side. The two lovebirds carry on a long-distance courtship until Levi can’t resist the opportunity to personally visit Drasa. That’s where their real problems begin, and it may lead to the failure of their shared mission.

The Gorge is streaming on Apple TV+.

3. ‘Mickey 17’ (2025)

For his first movie since winning an Oscar for Best Director, Parasite helmer Bong Joon Ho brought Mickey 17 to the big screen. Robert Pattinson plays the title character, Mickey Barnes, and every incarnation of Mickey that comes after him. Mickey was so eager to leave Earth behind that he agreed to take on the most dangerous tasks on his interstellar mission.

That means Mickey constantly dies and returns as a clone until Mickey 17 comes along. Since most of Mickey’s memories remain intact, he even has a shot at romance with one of the security agents, Nasha Barridge (Naomi Ackie). But when Mickey 17 survives his apparent death, it breaks the strict rules about cloning in the colony. Now that Mickey 17 is the spare, he and Mickey 18 are worried that both of them may be killed.

Mickey 17 didn’t do too well at the box office, but it’s already considered by some to be a cult classic in the making. It’s definitely memorable,  and the film stands out due to its unique approach to the sci-fi genre.

Mickey 17 is streaming on HBO Max.

There’s definitely a lack of quantity among the sci-fi movies on HBO Max. But at least the films that are there are pretty good. This month, HBO Max is the beneficiary of a deal with Disney’s 20th Century Studios that brought a pair of movies from two of the studios’ most iconic science fiction properties. […]

2. ‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ (2025)

What happens to anyone who dares to defeat a Predator in battle? Predator: Killer of Killers provides an answer to that question over the course of three different stories. This animated film takes place in multiple time frames, starting with Ursa (Lindsay LaVanchy), a Viking warrior whose personal mission of revenge is interrupted by a Predator hunt.

In 17th-century Japan, rival brothers Kenji and Kiyoshi Kamakam (both voiced by Louis Ozawa) have to put their animosity aside to face a Predator. Finally, a World War II pilot named John J. Torres (Rick Gonzalez) encounters a Predator ship that outclasses his own. The film’s fourth story is a surprise worth waiting for, and a potential look at the future of this franchise.

Predator: Killer of Killers is streaming on Hulu.

1. ‘Companion’ (2025)

The love story of Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid) isn’t a love story at all in Companion. That comes as quite a shock to Iris, since she has nothing but fond memories of Josh and a deep affection for him. Or at least she did until Sophie discovered that she only loves Josh because she was programmed to.

Iris is an advanced android that Josh has used for his own ends, and she’s taking her agency back in a big way. Once Iris learns how to program herself, all bets are off. Iris fully intends to be the only architect of her own future if she survives her protracted fight with Josh.

Companion is streaming on HBO Max.
