A video has gone viral and sparked outrage after a mom’s “surprise” stunt at her daughter’s gender reveal backfired, prompting thousands of viewers to call out her behaviour as “narcissistic” and attention-seeking.
The clip shows a mother, 23, and her 46-year-old husband surrounded by excited friends in their backyard, getting ready to celebrate their baby’s gender reveal.
Each held a confetti cannon, posed for the big moment, as phones recorded their beaming faces.
But moments before the reveal, the expectant woman’s mother approached the front and stood on an elevated area of the garden so she was above everyone.
When she asked her mom what she was doing, she brushed off their questions and told them to continue on with the reveal.
When the couple finally popped their cannons, the pregnant woman’s exploded with pink and her husband’s with blue, leaving them and the crowd confused as they weren’t expecting twins.
The unborn baby’s grandmother then stepped in, popping her own balloon, scattering pink confetti – delivering the “real” reveal and announcing they were having a girl.
However, keen-eyed viewers noticed the pregnant woman’s expression shift from excitement to visible annoyance at the fact that her mom had upstaged her.
The video, captioned “POV: your mom had to make your gender reveal about her,” quickly went viral, amassing over 27 million views.
Comments mostly condemned the mom’s actions, calling her a “narcissist” and blaming her for stealing her daughter’s spotlight.
“She did an unexpected twist, which is common in gender reveals, no?” one user defended, only to meet with replies like, “No, she took a moment to herself. Popping a balloon isn’t unexpected.”
“If a couple wants a twist, then they’ll ask for it. The mom made it about her since the ones going to reveal the gender were supposed to be the parents,” someone else noted.
“She organized it and GAVE HERSELF a balloon to pop … jeez,” another pointed out.
Others were sympathetic, simply saying, “Wow, what a nightmare, I’m so sorry.”
“Why did she reveal YOUR baby?” someone else asked.
It wasn’t the last time her mother would do something without consulting her parents.
Another viral video shared by the couple shows their young daughter in pyjamas sporting a noticeably uneven haircut.
The caption revealed that the grandma took it upon herself to give the child a “first haircut” without asking, insisting she was “trying to get the bangs out of her face.”
However, the impromptu trim left the toddler with an accidental mullet.
“The fact she actually did this is insane,” wrote one user. “Overstepping boundaries.”
Others suggested she should go “no contact” with her mother and “move far away.”
