Former New York Yankees star Jesús Montero has died after a motorcycle crash. He was 35.
“The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jesús Montero,” the official social media account for the MLB team shared on Sunday, October, 19, confirming the former player’s death. “We send our sincerest condolences to his family & loved ones.”
Alongside the message, the Yankees account shared a photo of Montero in his gear smiling for the camera with text that read, “Jesús Montero. 1989-2025.”
Montero, who also played for the Seattle Mariners, was honored by the MLB team on Sunday.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Mariner Jesús Montero. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and loved ones,” the official social media account wrote, alongside a blue heart emoji.
A GoFundMe was created for Montero on October 6 after he was involved in a “serious motorcycle accident.”
“He is currently in critical condition, with multiple fractures in his leg, several broken ribs, and severe lung and organ injuries,” the website read. “Doctors have kept him in an induced coma to help with oxygenation and stabilization, and he is also undergoing dialysis to support his kidneys.”
The message continued, “Jesús is not only a great athlete but also a kind, generous, and big-hearted man. Those who know him understand his strength and fighting spirit — but today, he needs our help to keep fighting off the field.”
The GoFundMe noted that the medical and surgical costs, supplies and treatments needed for his recovery are “extremely high.”
“That’s why we have created this GoFundMe campaign to help cover his medical expenses and ensure he receives the best possible care,” the post read. “All funds raised will be managed by his brother, Jesús Rafael Montero, who is overseeing the current medical costs.”
In an update shared on October 16, Montero’s family expressed their “deepest gratitude for all your support, prayers, and messages — they have been the greatest source of strength for Jesús and our family.”
“Jesús remains in the ICU, under critical condition,” the message read. “He continues on dialysis, as his kidneys have not yet responded. He recently underwent surgery to stabilize his leg, which was successful, but he still needs to undergo a chest surgery, which is complex but necessary for his recovery.”
The statement continued, “We know the road ahead is long, but we trust in his strength and in all the love and support you’ve shown. That is why we continue to ask for your prayers and financial support through this campaign, which has been essential to continue his treatment.”
The family thanked donors from the “bottom of [their] hearts,” adding, “thank you for being with us — for your kind words, your time, your prayers, and your generosity. Each gesture of support gives us strength to keep going by Jesús’ side.”
Montero made his big league debut with the Yankees in 2011 before he joined the Mariners the following year. Montero appeared in his final big league game in 2015 and had stints with the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles.
