How Did Michaela Medek Die?
Michaela was discovered unresponsive at the family’s home in Columbus, Ohio, on September 10. Columbus Police reported to the home shortly after 3:20 a.m., where they found an injured Michaela.
She was rushed to OhioHealth Pickerington Hospital, where doctors spent days trying to save her life. However, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead on September 14, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
Austen, who shares three kids with Michaela, spoke to homicide detectives shortly after her death, telling them that he wasn’t sure what had happened to his wife. The Columbus Dispatch reported that he suggested she possibly fell, alleging that he found her in an unconscious state.
However, an autopsy proved that Michaela’s injuries were not consistent with a hard fall. Instead, the Columbus Dispatch reported that authorities believed her injuries were more consistent with a severe beating.
Most of Michaela’s injuries were sustained to the head, while medical examiners eventually determined that her death was a homicide.
Austen Medek Shared a Concerning Facebook Post on the Day of Michaela Medek’s Death
Suspicions of Austen’s involvement in his wife’s death likely grew when he shared a concerning Facebook post on the day of her death.
“This will be the hardest post I’ll ever do,” he wrote in the post reviewed by Us Weekly. “As most have heard my Beautiful wife, my rock and Mother to our 3 precious children, passed away Thursday, September 11th at 1pm in the afternoon.”
The post continued, “Michaela Medek was not an easy one to convince to be my girlfriend, in fact it took a long time to break down her distrust in men. But over time and lots of patience she finally agreed to ‘go steady.’ Our relationship to each other was always a continuous improvement for both of us. Eventually growing into our faith and more.”
“I don’t have enough space to tell you everything about how beautiful My Kayla was,” the post noted. “Just know she was my complete world and Im lost without her. I will continue to make Jesus a priority to the kids and myself to ensure we make it back to her in heaven.”
Austen Medek Was Arrested in Connection to His Wife Michaela Medek’s Death
Amid the investigation, police grew to suspect that Michaela was allegedly beaten by Austen during a violent domestic violence incident.
Austen was arrested by a Columbus Police SWAT squad on December 15, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Austen is currently in prison, according to jail records viewed by Us Weekly. His bond has been set to $3 million, per ABC 6.
It appears that he has not yet entered a plea as of December 22, 2025.
