Jenny McCarthy is weighing in on a viral conspiracy theory that someone impersonated her ex Jim Carrey at a recent awards show in France.
McCarthy, 53, told People that “it was definitely Jim Carrey” who attended the 51st annual César Awards in Paris on February 26, noting that the actor looked excited to attend the ceremony, where he received the Honorary César.
“He looked very happy at that award show. And I was happy for him. That’s the first thing I noticed. I said, ‘Oh, wow, Jim looks really happy,’” added McCarthy, who dated Carrey, 64, from 2005 to 2010.
McCarthy’s husband, actor Donnie Wahlberg, added to the outlet, “You know, that’s the part that, sadly, people miss. We’re so obsessed with how he looks that we didn’t consider how happy he looked.”
Carrey was the subject of bizarre speculation that someone impersonated him at the French film awards, which organizer Gregory Caulier later shut down in a statement to Variety.
“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer,” Caulier said in a March statement. “From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words.”
Caulier continued, “He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”
The César Awards’ general delegate said the viral speculation that spread across social media was a “non-issue,” adding, “I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”
At the awards, Carrey made a rare public appearance with his current girlfriend, Min Ah, whom he thanked in his acceptance speech.
“Tonight with this magnificent honor, this square has come full-circle,” Carrey said. “Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah. I love you, Min Ah.”
Carrey and McCarthy split in April 2010 after five years of dating.
“I’m so grateful for the years Jim and I shared together,” McCarthy said in a statement at the time. “I will continue to be in his daughter’s life and will always keep Jim as a leading man in my heart.”
McCarthy went on to meet singer and actor Wahlberg, 56, and the pair wed in August 2014.
