Concert organizers confirmed that a crew member died while setting up the stage for Shakira’s upcoming Brazil show.

“The event organizers confirm that an accident this Sunday afternoon (April 26th) tragically claimed the life of a professional who was working on assembling the structures for the show,” the official Todo Mundo No Rio Instagram account shared in a statement on Sunday, April 26. “First responders provided initial care at the scene, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the patient.”

The statement continued, “Unfortunately, the professional passed away at the hospital.”

The concert organizer added that they are “providing all support, comfort, and solidarity to the responsible company, its team, and the victim’s family” at this time.

Shakira, who is set to take the stage for the free show on Saturday, May 2, has not yet spoken out following the incident.

An eyewitness told France24 on Sunday that they saw “people running” on Sunday as the stage was being set up. “When we looked, the structure was on the ground,” they recalled.

“People were saying that a man had gotten trapped underneath,” the eyewitness added. “People rushed over to pull him out.”

The Rio de Janeiro Military Fire Brigade offered further details about the incident in a separate statement to People on Sunday.

“A worker suffered crushing injuries to his lower limbs in a lifting system,” they shared. “Before the arrival of emergency teams, the victim had already been removed from the equipment by other employees present.”

The statement continued, “Military personnel from the ambulance service of the 3rd Maritime Group (GMAR-Copacabana) immediately began pre-hospital care on the victim, who was then transported to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital. Despite the efforts of the rescue teams, death was confirmed.”

Todo Mundo No Rio is a free live event, which started in 2024, allowing for the celebration of international music in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event transforms Copacabana Beach into a stage for a planned concert taking place in the beginning of May, which kicks off a month of cultural celebration for the country.

Madonna was the first to perform in May 2024, followed by Lady Gaga in May 2025. Shakira’s upcoming performance was announced earlier this year.
