An investigation has been launched after a newborn baby was found dead inside of a porta-potty at the Electric Forest music festival.

The Michigan State Police Department announced that the body of a “neonate” was found in a porta-potty in the camping area at the festival held in Rothbury, Michigan, on the morning of Sunday, June 28, according to WZZM 13.

A neonate is a baby who is 4 weeks old or younger, according to Medline Plus.

No further details about the baby have been shared with the public, including its gender, race or the health the child was in at the time they were found.

Authorities said that the body was discovered by a restroom vending company employee while they performed routine maintenance at the festival.

Following the discovery, authorities quickly launched an investigation into the manner. Michigan State Police said in their initial release that they had no additional information to share, though they insisted that there was no threat to the public.

Investigators have asked the public to help amid the investigation and said that any information would be appreciated as they work to learn what happened to the baby.

“If you were in the area and observed anything unusual, or if you have information that you believe may be relevant, we encourage you to come forward,” the police department said.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation and ask that people avoid speculation on social media out of respect for the investigation and those affected,” the department added.

It is not currently clear if police have any suspects in the matter or if witnesses have shared any helpful information regarding the case.

The Electric Forest music festival took place at Double JJ Ranch and began on Thursday, June 25, before it concluded on June 28. The festival featured dozens of DJs and music artists performing sets, including Chris Lake, ALLEYCVT, Andy C, Avello, Brunello, Vincent Antone, Chris Luno, Close Friends Only, The Flints, Sullivan King, The String Cheese Incident, Lane 8, Lightcode, Wax Monkey and more, according to its website.

In addition to the performances, the festival also offered several activities including camping, a silent disco, plug in programs, a time travel agency experience, a camp gear donation program and a Camp Traction x Consciousness Group Sober Meet Up.
