A historic Venice Beach bar shocked customers after announcing it was no longer serving alcohol, frustrating thirsty regulars of the longtime watering hole.
The Venice Whaler, located near the famous Venice Fishing Pier, posted a message on Friday about the service change while encouraging customers to support the booze-less business.
“We’re temporarily not serving alcohol, but our famous burgers, pizza, and good vibes are still here!” a post on the establishment’s Instagram account read.
“Behind every Whaler memory is a team that makes it happen. Come grab a bite, bring your friends, and help keep our staff working and our doors open,” they added.
The Whaler, which also has a location in Santa Monica, touts itself as “making locals feel like they’re ‘always on vacay’, since 1944,” according to its website.
It’s unclear why the local favorite is no longer serving alcohol.
The Whaler’s liquor license is listed as suspended by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, though no reason is provided.
Upset customers reacted to the posted on social media, calling it “a shame.”
“Venice Whaler without alcohol is like a strip club without strippers,” one wrote.
“No wonder everywhere is closing and struggling. And if they can’t bring in money for alcohol, this place will most likely be another one closing,” another added.
“Outta beer, outta here!” a third chimed in.
“Such a shame. We need a new mayor and a city council that cares,” yet another wrote.
The California Post contacted the Whaler and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for comment.
