The Rainmaker has returned for a second season, which looks a little different compared to season 1.
“We think [this time around it is] bigger and better. The scope of it is so much larger,” Milo Callaghan exclusively told Us. “I feel like we are more of a team.”
P. J. Byrne agreed that the team is “so good” after getting the hang of it. He also teased that “the stakes have been raised” moving forward — and Callaghan expanded on how that will play out throughout the season.
“The scope of the show is larger. I think it feels more expensive. Also the cases that we’re dealing with — it’s hard to top the David and Goliath formulation of season 1 but we’re leaning into the plight of childhood and children this season,” he continued. “It is as vulnerable as I think you can get.”
Based on John Grisham‘s 1995 novel of the same name, The Rainmaker follows young lawyer Rudy (Callaghan), who is fired from his prestigious white-collar firm and signs on with small-time ambulance chaser Bruiser (Lana Parrilla). Rudy subsequently faces off against his former boss in court.
The book was adapted into a movie by Francis Ford Coppola in 1997 starring Mickey Rourke and Matt Damon while USA Network’s version features several changes from the book and movie.
“Season 2 feels elevated on every level,” Parrilla, 49, teased. “In every department as well, from how we look to how the show looks. We are more seasoned in our characters.”
Byrne, 51, referred to The Rainmaker as “a comedy, a drama, a detective show,” adding, “It’s an accident show, it’s a thriller. I get scared a lot.”
While teasing season 2, Callaghan praised the case at the center of the series.
“It is about the juvenile detention system in America. We all felt like we could meet that and interact with that material in a really organic, authentic way because it felt so hard hitting,” he told Us. “It is the plight of the most vulnerable people in society, and we follow that from episode one to episode 10.”
Bruiser’s ex-husband will also play a large role, with Parrilla saying, “There’s a lot that happens with that case.”
The Rainmaker airs on USA Network Fridays at 10 p.m. ET.
