Andrew Thomas sounds ready to return for Giants

It sounds as if Andrew Thomas’ hiatus from the starting lineup will be a one-week deal, and that the Giants will have their left tackle back on the field for Sunday’s game against the Rams.

“I’m feeling better, doing a lot of work, a lot of treatment and trying to get ready for Sunday,’’ Thomas said Tuesday on the latest episode of the New York Post’s “Blue Rush” podcast, which will be available Thursday morning.

Thomas came out of the victory in New Orleans with a sore foot and he was limping noticeably last week as he walked out to practice. He was active in Week 5, but did not play a single snap as the Giants lost to the Cowboys, 44-20.

“My mindset is always trying to play but the coaches and medical staff, they’re going to make the best decision for the team and for myself, health-wise, over the season,’’ Thomas said.

Before the game in Dallas, Thomas was put through an extensive workout, with coach Joe Judge, general manager Dave Gettleman and members of the medical staff all watching intently.

“I think that’s the best I’ve moved since the injury,’’ Thomas said.  “Like in practice [last week] I got a few reps but they could tell I was a little gimpy.  But that was the best I moved all week so I think that’s progress.’’

Without Thomas, the Giants moved Nate Solder to left tackle and took Matt Peart off the bench to start at right tackle. The offensive line did not allow a sack, but Daniel Jones was under duress for much of the first half before being knocked out of the game with a concussion in the second quarter.

Judge said having Thomas in uniform was “more of an emergency type of deal.  We had a plan going in to play the other guys first.’’

As for Thomas moving forward, Judge said “We’re optimistic to go ahead and get him out there with us and get him rolling.’’

Thomas played in all 16 games as a rookie, starting 15 — he did not start in Washington because he was late to a team meeting. He started the first four games this season and his play was so vastly improved that the coaching staff did not have to give him any help, as far as providing extra blockers in pass protection.

The Giants do not want players announcing their availability status – that comes from the head coach. The 22-year old sounds ready to play, though.

“I’m feeling better,’’ he said.  “Like I said, that was the best I’ve moved in that workout that I had.  A few days off of it definitely helped.’’
