Nauti or nice?
Cruise passengers are divided over a viral photo that shows how someone chose to tip their cabin steward.
John Heald, Carnival Cruise Lines’ Brand Ambassador, took to Facebook to ask his followers how they felt about spelling out “thank you” in money on the bed for the steward to find as a tip.
He shared a photo of money laid out on a bed reading, “Thanks Ketut.”
In the poll, 30% of people voted that they “have no problem with people doing that. Let them do what they want. It’s just nice to give the crew an extra tip.”
Meanwhile, 4% voted, “Please tell people to stop spreading money out on the bed spelling thank to the cabin cleaners. They may think it’s cool but it’s demeaning for the crew.” It appears that Heald added his own commentary on this option, writing that he agrees.
But most people in the comments agreed with the 4% of voters.
“I’ve always thought spreading the money out on the bed just creates more work for the stewards on their busiest days,” one person pointed out.
“Having them have to ‘collect’ the money spread out on the bed is so degrading. I could never do that to another human being,” another said.
“I believe spreading money around is a simple self-indulgent stunt that is less about the cabin attendant and more about posting it on social media as they inevitably do,” someone added.
“The part of the gratuity issue I don’t understand is why people feel the need to brag about what or how they give. Give or not. Make it dramatic or put it in their hand. Just keep it to yourself. Good grief!” a user chimed in.
“I like putting it in an envelope with a thank you note, just seems classier and not have to make our steward bend all over to collect the money,” one wrote.
“You can leave a tip however you want but the whole rest of the world doesn’t need a visual on how much you did so we can all pat you on your back for your efforts. Do it. Do it quietly, like a normal person,” another said.
One person pointed out that sometimes the cabin steward may be leaving the ship due to their contract, so if the tip is on the bed they may never get it.
“We don’t spread the money on the bed. Sometimes the steward may be leaving the ship because their contract is ending or transferring, so they are not returning to the cabins the next morning.”
