A deaf woman was mauled to death by a pack of dogs that attacked her and her elderly husband in the backyard of their Missouri home – just one week shy of her birthday.
The woman, 62, was killed by three canines that descended on the couple’s St. Louis home around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, according to St. Louis Metropolitan Police.
The woman, who was hearing impaired, was later identified by her family as Gladys Anthony, KMOV reported.
“They took a chunk of her arm,” her daughter, Keisah Anthony, told the outlet.
“Her legs were ate up. There was nothing that could be done to stop those damn dogs from touching her.”
Police responded to the home after the victim’s 73-year-old husband fired gunshots into the air in an attempt to scare off the killer canines, which was picked up by ShotSpotter technology. Cops found the animals aggressively barking at the couple while surrounding them in their backyard, authorities said.
Responding officers pepper-sprayed the dogs and pulled the woman – who was barely conscious and heavily bleeding – inside the home and rendered aid before she was rushed to a nearby hospital.
She later died during surgery, police said.
Her husband, who was not identified, suffered several bites to his arms and legs as he attempted to fend off the dogs with a broom after firing the warning shots.
“This was an absolute tragedy,” St. Louis police spokesperson Mitch McCoy told the outlet.
“We want people to feel safe in their neighborhood. They have a right to feel safe in their neighborhood and we’re gonna expect that.”
Police said they tracked the dogs to a neighboring home where they located their 54-year-old owner, who is now cooperating with the department’s ongoing investigation.
The deadly dogs were seized by the City’s Animal Control Division, police said.
“She was sweet. She was loveable. Everybody that knew her loved her,” Anthony told the outlet.
“It’s just crazy this happened to her like this. She didn’t deserve it at all. Not one bit of it and now she’s got grandkids who don’t have their grandmother.”
