Elisabeth Moss took lots of mementos from The Handmaid’s Tale set after wrapping the show’s sixth and final season.
“I looted the place,” Moss, 42, told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s Wednesday, April 2, premiere in Los Angeles. As for what she took, the actress admitted that she is now in possession of a “full-set handmaid’s costume.”
“I don’t know what I’m going to do with it, it’s not like I’m going to wear it,” she quipped. “I have a Scrabble board; I’ve got a lot. I took as much as I could; don’t tell anyone.”
Moss isn’t the only member of the show’s cast and crew to take some memorable props and costumes. Co-showrunner Eric Tuchman, for his part, also took a “bonnet-to-boots” handmaid’s costume from the set, which he told the outlet he plans to keep in his closet.
Moss’ costar Yvonne Strahovski decided to keep her character Serena’s leather finger, telling THR, “I feel like it’s a winner.” Madeline Brewer, meanwhile, said she “for sure” had to take one of her character Janine’s iconic eyepatches.
“I walked right off of set and put all my stuff in my bag and got the hell out of there,” she joked.
Based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is set in a dystopian future where women are forced to become handmaids to the men of the country of Gilead. While season 5 ended with June (Moss) fleeing to Vancouver, the final season’s trailer teased her return to Gilead to take down the corrupt system from the inside.
At Wednesday’s premiere, Samira Wiley exclusively told Us Weekly that she “stole” the “very first” dress she ever wore on the show on the “very first day on set” of the final season. She even teased what she may do with her handmaid’s costumes, joking, “Should we burn them? Yeah, burn them.”
Jordana Blake, who plays June’s daughter, Hannah, opted for something more sentimental from the set. “In season 1, Hannah got this stuffed bunny, and I’ve had it ever since,” she told Us on Wednesday. “It’s still on my bed. I’ve had it for, like, maybe seven years now, eight years.”
Executive producer Warren Littlefield exclusively told Us he took everything from a “commander’s uniform,” to a “full handmaid’s robe and bonnet” to a Scrabble board. Other cast members, however, were not as comfortable taking items from the set.
“I should have. I usually do take a little totem or little token,” new cast addition Timothy Simons told Us. “I probably should have taken the little pins, but I didn’t. But I was new, you know what I mean? I came in this year, I can’t go around stealing s***. They’re like, ‘You just got here.’ Elisabeth Moss, she could steal s***. I can’t.”
Kristen Gutoskie, who plays Beth, said the only thing she stole was the real food used while filming scenes. “Sometimes you can’t eat all the food. They put [it out] as props, but it’s like, looks incredible, right?” she shared. “But we were starting to get really hungry, so Elisabeth Moss and I just started snacking on the props and they told us we could. So, I no longer have that.”
Season six of The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on Hulu Tuesday, April 8.
