Travelers leaving town from Newark Liberty International Airport should expect possible flight delays Friday due to a mysterious “equipment outage” and possible chaos sparked by Hurricane Milton, officials said.

Authorities declared a “ground delay” at the airport until 10:59 p.m. with impacted flights leaving an average of 15 minutes late as of 6 p.m., according to the National Airspace System Status.

“Flights are still arriving and departing. They are just spaced out which causes delays,” said a spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Flights arriving from Hurricane Milton-ravaged areas may have also increased air traffic “volume” — a second factor cited for causing the delays at the travel hub, the spokeswoman said.

“The other thing is volume: It could also be weather delays related to Hurricane season,” she said.

The specifics of the equipment outage weren’t immediately clear Friday, she said.

Earlier in the day, a ground stop was declared at the airport but was lifted at 4 p.m.

The FAA didn’t immediately return an inquiry from The Post.
