Wrong kind of carats.
An amateur jewel thief swallowed Tiffany & Co. earrings worth $769,000 in a strong-arm heist gone wrong last week, according to Orlando police.
Jaythan Lawrence Gilder, 32, pretended to be a representative for an Orlando Magic player to gain access to pricey jewelry at a Tiffany & Co. store in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 26, WFLA reported.
The accused thief allegedly ran out of the store with two sets of earrings — one 4.86-carat set worth $160,000 and another 8.10-carat set worth $609,500, according to the local outlet.
Gilder was stopped by the Orlando Police Department on Interstate 10 and charged with resisting arrest — but they were initially unable to locate the stolen earrings and thus, charge him for the theft.
But while in jail, Gilder “spontaneously” asked staff if he was going to be charged “with what’s in my stomach,” the arrest report reviewed by WFLA read.
Gilder then underwent a body scan where detectives were able to spot foreign objects working their way through his digestive tract.
“These foreign objects are suspected to be the Tiffany & Co. earrings taken in the robbery but will need to be collected by WCSO after they are passed through Gilder’s system prior to confirming,” the arrest report stated.
A trooper in the Orange County jail overheard Gilder say, “I should have thrown them out the window,” the report claims.
Gilder has 48 outstanding warrants in Colorado and was charged with robbing another Tiffany & Co. in Texas in 2022, according to that report.
He is now charged with first-degree grand theft and robbery with a mask.
