Going into the second half of season 2, High Potential is on a mission to answer some major questions — especially about Roman.

During the winter finale on Tuesday, October 28, Ava (Amirah J) got in contact with Arthur (Mekhi Phifer) after looking through her missing father’s backpack. Ava was determined to find out more about her dad, Roman, who clearly kept tabs on her but couldn’t fully return to her life.

Arthur hinted that there was more to the story before the episode ended with a mysterious — and seemingly dangerous — man played by John Pyper-Ferguson appeared and demanded the location of Roman’s backpack..

“I love the last half of season 2 because I think we start to see all of the characters developing in such a nice way,” Amirah, 18, exclusively told Us Weekly. “We get to see the backstory not just for Ava but the detectives in the precinct: Soto and Oz and everyone else. We get to dive into their story, which I think is nice that we’re getting to know everybody.”

High Potential is coming back — with more episodes — but what can fans expect from season 2 when it comes to plot twists, onscreen romance and more? High Potential, which premiered in September 2024, follows a high-potential intellectual named Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) who teams up with the LAPD to help solve murders. She gets […]

Ava will continue to grow while searching for her dad.

“She’s really growing up in a way that I think is so nice. She’s leaning more into her vulnerable side and allowing that to show and not try and be closed off and hide it as much anymore,” the actress teased. “She still has that spunk that makes her her mother’s daughter. But I think that the way her and Morgan are starting to communicate with each other and understand each other more as the season goes on is really, really beautiful.”

There are also developments that take place when it comes to Roman. “What I have been told from the showrunner, the writers and from what I’m understanding is that they don’t want to drag it out too far to the point where it’s like, ‘OK, we’re sick of this,’” Amirah shared. “We’re dragging this out for too long now. But we want to keep that mystery going and feed fans a little bit and then back up a little bit. By the end of this season, a lot of questions will have firm and actual answers to them.”

High Potential, which premiered in September 2024, follows a high-potential intellectual named Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) who teams up with the LAPD to help solve murders. The season 1 finale confirmed that Morgan’s ex Roman was still alive after going missing for more than a decade. The only information Morgan — and all of Us — have is that her ex worked as an FBI informant and doesn’t trust the LAPD.

“On set we would all talk about [who we think could play Roman]. I think Jesse Williams would be cool,” Amirah told Us. “We said Michael Ealy. Whoever they cast is going to be great. I’m just excited to see who it is.”

Looking ahead at the rest of the season, Amirah is thrilled to see Ava’s story only grow from here.

“I feel like I know more about her [this season]. She has had wonderful character development since season 1,” she added. “With this season, it’s really interesting. I feel like every episode brings something new going on for her and a new clue she’s finding out about her dad and how that’s affecting her every day life. But it’s nice. I like that I get to learn about Ava.”

High Potential returns January 6, 2026 on ABC. The show is streaming on Hulu.
