Tests confirmed that Jets safety Marcus Maye has a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season. It is a blow for Maye, who is scheduled to be a free agent in March.
“The one thing with Marcus is he is a young man, he’s got a tremendous mindset to him and he is made of grit,” coach Robert Saleh said Friday, the day after the Jets’ ugly 45-30 loss to the Colts. “His ride is not over, his story is not over. If there’s anyone that’s going to be able to come back from this and go make the things that he deserves, it’s Marcus.”
Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur has called the past two games from the coaches’ box upstairs instead of the sideline, where he was for the first six games. The offense has played much better in those two games. LaFleur had been on the sideline to help rookie QB Zach Wilson, but felt he did not need to be there to help Mike White.
“I always wanted to be up there,” LaFleur said. “That’s where, right when I first got here, that’s 100 percent where I was going to go. It’s what I’ve always felt, just watching Kyle [Shanahan] in 2016 and being up there the last two years in San Francisco, I feel like everyone sees it a little bit better up there.”
TE Tyler Kroft is headed to IR with a chest injury, Saleh said. In addition to Wilson, the Jets believe WR Corey Davis (hip) and RB Tevin Coleman (hamstring) will be able to practice this week. Saleh said the Jets hope to have DE Bryce Huff (back), who went on IR on Thursday, return for the Texans game on Nov. 28.
