Julia Roberts may soon be reprising her role as Julianne Potter.

The My Best Friend’s Wedding actress told Variety in a story published Thursday, September 18, that she is in talks for a sequel to the hit 1997 romantic comedy.

“They’re talking to me,” confirmed Roberts, 57.

Roberts was speaking to Variety alongside Luca Guadagnino, director of the psychological thriller After the Hunt, in which Roberts stars. Guadagnino, 54, said he would direct the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel “in a second.” (After the Hunt hits theaters October 10 and also stars Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri and Chloë Sevigny.)

Only a select few actresses are synonymous with the romantic comedy movie genre —and Julia Roberts is certainly one of them. From her 1988 foray into the genre in the beloved film Mystic Pizza, in which a young Roberts plays a teenage pizza waitress desperate to find her way after graduating high school, to her […]

My Best Friend’s Wedding starred Roberts as Julianne, opposite Dermot Mulroney as Michael O’Neal, her best friend. In the movie, Julianne realizes she is in love with Michael, only to learn he is engaged to Kimmy Wallace (Cameron Diaz). She then makes plans to sabotage the wedding with the help of her friend George (Rupert Everett).

A box office hit, the original movie grossed nearly $300 million on a $38 million budget.

“We really got lucky coming together,” Roberts told E! Daily Pop in April 2022. “None of us knew each other before we made the movie, and we just had a really great chemistry. It just worked. I mean, we all really liked each other. Dermot and I are still really great friends — we talk all the time, and I think that that is a testament to the beautiful time that we all had making this film together.”

Talk of a sequel isn’t mere fantasy, either. News broke last year that the movie was in early development at Sony Pictures with Celine Song (Materialists) set to write the screenplay.

Mulroney, 61, revealed he has “always said yes” to a possible sequel.

“Maybe it’s time. I sure hope so,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. “That movie brought so much joy. It would be amazing to re-up on that.”

P.J. Hogan, who directed the first film, said in 2019 that he had talked to Roberts about a sequel, but was skeptical about whether it could happen.

“We did have some discussion about a sequel,” he told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “I remember talking to Julia about it. It was something about Rupert was going to get married and she was going to break up their wedding. I thought that would’ve been fun, but I don’t think we could find a way to bring all those characters back.”
