Katie Thurston’s breast cancer treatment has been paused after spots were found on her liver.
Thurston, 34, shared the update via her Instagram Stories on Monday, March 24, writing that a liver biopsy is scheduled for this week.
The former Bachelorette star revealed that her doctor “seemed to be leaning more on the cancer in the liver vs optimistic it was nothing. This would put me at stage 4.” She added that she’d “love to hear from my sisters who are stage 4 in terms of quality of life, motherhood, etc.”
Additionally, Thurston filled in her fans through “Boobie Broadcast,” her Instagram broadcast channel. She said that doctors found “two liver lesions” that were likely a sign of “metastatic disease,” and added that “the next step is a biopsy of the liver spots to confirm for sure.”
Thurston announced her stage-3 breast cancer diagnosis via social media in mid-February. “This is day one of sharing and is going to be a long one,” she wrote in her lengthy Instagram post at the time. “This first step of acceptance of my reality was the hardest. But I am ready to fight this.”
In Monday’s “Boobie Broadcast” update, she shared that she’d had a Zoladex injection that day. (The hormone can help shrink tumors by reducing the production of estrogen.) “Asked for ice ahead of time and that helped,” Thurston said, adding that she refused to look at the needle upon “learning it was so big.”
She became very emotional during the procedure, which is part of an I-SPY clinical trial.
“Do I cry too much?” she wondered aloud. “Hyperventilating too much? Not brave enough? I’m here to stay as long as they’ll allow it.”
Two days earlier, Thurston married Jeff Arcuri during a private backyard ceremony. She and Arcuri, 36, spent Sunday, March 23, in a hospital room. “Jeff and are celebrating our honeymoon with some drinks,” Thurston wrote in an Instagram Story. She turned the camera to her partner and their mocktails on the table beside her. “Cheers, baby,” she quipped as she and Arcuri jokingly toasted with their bottles. “To [being] husband and wife!”
In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly earlier this month, Arcuri, a comedian, spoke about how Thurston’s cancer battle had affected their wedding plans.
“You would think it would cause more tribulation or problems between you, but it’s bonded us more than anything else, which is why we’re moving up the wedding a little bit,” Arcuri told Us on March 20.
Thurston, meanwhile, described their low-key nuptials to Us as “so sweet,” adding, “Obviously, we were wanting to plan a wedding and there’s a lot of emotions that come in with chemo and the impact and the health and we don’t know what the next year looks like. And one night he said, ‘I want to show you that I still love you and that I’m here to stay. I’ll get married to you tomorrow.’ We flew our parents in from Michigan and Washington State. We got our marriage license and a friend is just gonna marry us.”
