KJ Apa revealed that his nude scene in The Map That Leads to You was actually meant for costar Madelyn Cline.
“KJ, of course, will not say it, but I’m going to say something that may sell the movie to a lot of you who are wondering whether to go see it,” Andy Cohen said during his interview with Apa, 28, on the Thursday, August 14, broadcast of SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, adding, “You can very clearly see KJ’s ass in the movie.”
Apa confirmed that he did strip down for the romance film and that his buttocks were “hairy” at the time of filming because it was an impromptu decision.
“I didn’t know that day that I was going to be showing my ass,” the actor explained. “Had I known, maybe I would’ve shaved it.”
Cohen then asked if Apa had prior knowledge about the scene to physically prepare.
“They didn’t say, ‘Hey, by the way, tomorrow’s your ass shot. You want to be doing your squats?’” Cohen asked.
Apa revealed that it ended up being an impromptu one for him as it was originally intended for Cline.
“Originally she was meant to be naked in the shower, and then something happened that day,” Apa explained.
After Cline was unable to do a scene, Apa stepped in.
Apa and Cline star as love interests in the film adaptation of the J.P. Monninger novel of the same name. Apa plays Jack while Cline portrays Heather. According to the synopsis, Heather meets Jack by chance while traveling in Europe. The travelers ultimately fall in love as they take in the sights together.
In addition to Apa and Cline, The Map That Leads to You cast includes Sofia Wylie, Madison Thompson, Orlando Norman, Josh Lucas, Eva García Montiel and Giuseppe Schillaci.
During a Wednesday, August 13 appearance on Today, Apa teased to fans what they can expect from the romance movie.
“There’s a lot of traveling. The characters are all traveling through Europe and that’s the journey they go on as they fall in love,” the Riverdale alum said. “Jack is more spontaneous and wants to live in the moment given his current circumstance that people will learn in the film and she’s more by the book [and] likes to schedule everything and they learn and feed off each other.”
While filming The Map That Leads to You, the cast filmed throughout Europe, which Apa shared was like a “big holiday” but also an exhausting two months.
The Map That Leads to You premieres on Amazon Prime Video on August 20.
