Fast food fans are grimacing over this revelation.
McDonald’s has revealed that Grimace is a tastebud, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
For decades, customers have speculated about what the amorphous character is supposed to be, with some theorizing that the purple personality was intended to represent a milkshake.
The company has long been cryptic about Grimace’s identity, with conflicting public statements.
The Post has contacted McDonald’s for confirmation of the Daily Mail report.
If the report is correct, it’s not the first time McDonald’s employees have declared Grimace is a tastebud.
In 2021, Brian Bates, an award-winning manager of a McDonald’s in Canada revealed to CBC News that Grimace is “an enormous taste bud, but a taste bud nonetheless.”
He told the outlet that Grimace serves to show that the food tastes good.
However, back in 2012, the McDonald’s corporate account posted: “Grimace is the embodiment of a milkshake, though others still insist he’s a taste bud.”
“Whether he’s a taste bud, a milkshake or just your favorite purple blob — the best part about Grimace is that he means different things to different people,” a McDonald’s spokesperson told People in 2021. “Whatever he is, we’re just proud our bestie makes people happy.”
Whatever Grimace’s identity, he has certainly evolved over the years,
“The original Grimace was scaly, mean-looking, had four arms, and had no charm whatsoever,” former McDonald’s vice‑president of advertising Roy T. Bergold Jr. previously wrote in QSR magazine.
“He scared kids. We changed him to a soft, plush, two-armed blob of a sweetheart who only wanted McDonald’s milkshakes and to hang out with Ronald.”
Grimace has become a pop culture icon, sparking social media trends and even winning over the hearts of Mets fans.
