A Michigan woman won big in her local Powerball drawing after asking AI to pick her numbers.
Tammy Carvey, 45, won $100,000 in September’s $1.787 billion Powerball jackpot after having ChatGPT randomly generate a set of lottery numbers for her.
“I asked ChatGPT for a set of Powerball numbers and those are the numbers I played,” she told the Michigan lottery after she collected her prize, according to KARE 11.
“I only play Powerball when the jackpot gets up there and the jackpot was over $1 billion, so I bought a ticket,” she added.
Four of the numbers the chatbot coughed up matched the white Powerballs, instantly winning Carvey $50,000.
But she also paid extra for a Power Play, which doubled her winnings and earned her a whopping $100,000.
And she didn’t even realize how much she made until after she won and began the process of claiming her winnings.
“Google told me it was a $50,000 prize, so that’s what I thought I’d won,” Carvey said.
“It wasn’t until I logged into my Michigan Lottery account that I realized I added the Power Play to my ticket and actually won $100,000! My husband and I were in total disbelief.”
Carvey plans to put her small fortune towards paying off the rest of her home, and will put the rest in savings.
While she used AI to pick her numbers, the Michigan Lottery insisted her winning was still completely luck of the draw.
“The results of all Lottery drawings are random and cannot be predicted by utilizing artificial intelligence or other number-generating tools,” the lottery said.
But Carvey isn’t the first to win using ChapGPT numbers.
Another woman, Virginian Carrie Edwards, also scored a win by matching five Powerball numbers she had ChatGPT generate.
Her prize hit at $50,000, but her power play tripled the winnings to $150,000.
September’s massive Powerball drawing was split by two lucky winners who played 11, 23, 44, 61, 62 and the red Powerball 17.
