Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber’s Daughter Kai, 16, Discusses Transgender Identity

Kai Schreiber is opening up about her identity.

The daughter of Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, Kai, 16, is a trans woman who describes herself as “basic, but in a chic way.” She also understands her place in the trans community.

“As a young trans girl, I’m always going to look up to the older generation of transgender people, especially in fashion,” Kai told Interview Magazine in a Q&A published Wednesday, June 11. “People like Alex Consani, Hunter Schafer, Hari Nef, Dara, Richie Shazam, Colin Jones, and so many more. It’s so great that there’s a strong community of us in the fashion world; it’s really a doll takeover.”

Even as a high school student, Kai knows what she wants to do and how she wants to get there. An aspiring model, she already has experience working for a Valentino campaign that shot in February.

“That job made me realize, ‘OK, this is what I want to do,’” she said.

“I want to be a supermodel. Period,” she added. “I’ve been practicing my walks in the kitchen for years; my mom can show you all the videos I forced her to film. Struggling with gender identity from a young age most likely had something to do with it. I always wanted to grow up and be a beautiful, glamorous, influential woman, like Marilyn.”

Now more comfortable with who she is, Kai has established her own style — something she said makes “the world more fun.”

“I love my low-rise jeans and black cardigan. That’s my go-to outfit,” she said. “I love when people have their own personal style…If you’re presenting yourself in a unique, cool way, people are immediately drawn in and want to know more. If every person was walking around in the same outfit, fashion wouldn’t be a thing.”

Liev and Watts have been vocal supporters of their daughter. Earlier this year, Schreiber revealed Kai never actually had to come out to him and Watts.

“Kai was always who Kai is,” Liev, 57, said in a May story for Variety. “But I suppose the most profound moment was her asking us to change her pronouns. To be honest with you, it didn’t feel like that big of a deal to me only because Kai had been so feminine for so long.”

“Kai is such a fighter,” he continued. “It’s important that she goes, ‘Hey, I am trans,’ and, ‘Look at me.’”

Liev and Watts, who were together for more than a decade from 2005 to 2016, also share son Sasha, 17. Liev is also dad to 21-month-old daughter Hazel Bee with wife Taylor Schreiber.
