You may have missed Love Life when it first came out on HBO Max in 2020. The streaming platform was still finding its footing, and then the pandemic happened — and you might’ve been more focused on rewatching comfort shows than trying something new. (No judgment here.)

But now that the romantic anthology series has started streaming on Netflix, it’s getting a second life.

Watch With Us is breaking down what makes Love Life so special — from its excellent cast to its unique storytelling framework, this series is a relatable deep dive into how our relationships shape us.

The Structure Is Different from Other Dating Series

Unlike other shows about dating, like Sex and the City, Insecure or The Mindy Project, Love Life isn’t chronological — and it doesn’t follow the same characters from one season to the next. Each of the two seasons focuses on a different lead and every significant romantic relationship in their life. Season 1 stars Anna Kendrick as Darby Carter, a single woman trying to find “the one,” while season 2 stars William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) as Marcus Watkins, a married man who realizes he may have picked the wrong one. Each episode spotlights a different relationship, whether the connection lasts years, months or even just hours.

More than anything, Love Life is a character study about how romantic entanglements change people — how they make mistakes, learn (or don’t) and grow. Seeing these relationships back-to-back, without filler storylines, lets you truly analyze how each one impacts the main character’s life.

Kendrick and Harper Are Captivating Performers

Kendrick has held movie star status for years, having led box office hits like Pitch Perfect, Trolls and A Simple Favor. In Love Life, we see her in a quieter, more grounded role. She’s just a woman trying to figure things out — and her charming mix of sarcasm and sincerity makes you root for her.

Harper, who stole our hearts as Chidi in The Good Place, hasn’t quite become a household name — but we hope that changes with the Love Life Netflix renaissance. As Marcus, he’s flawed, complicated and deeply vulnerable.
