Louisiana State Police maintain that former Louisiana State University football star Kyren Lacy was responsible for triggering a fatal car crash last year.
Authorities released new video on Tuesday, October 7, alleging that Lacy’s erratic driving in his green Dodge Charger was ultimately responsible for the death of 78-year-old Herman Hall in December 2024. (The video was released after Lacy’s attorney, Matt Ory, presented new evidence on Friday, October 3, that called the alleged circumstances into question.)
“Since the incident occurred, the Louisiana State Police never reported that the green Charger impacted any of the involved vehicles,” the Louisiana State Police department said on Tuesday. “However, all evidence collected supports the conclusion that Lacy’s reckless operation of the green Charger in oncoming traffic triggered the chain of events involving the other drivers, ultimately resulting in the fatal crash.”
Lacy was charged with felony negligent homicide and hit and run driving and misdemeanor reckless driving in January.
The LSU wide receiver was found dead of an apparent “self-inflicted gunshot wound” in Houston on April 12, just days before he was scheduled to appear before a grand jury. He was 24 years old.
In the video released by authorities on Tuesday, Lacy’s driving is tracked in the moments leading up to Hall being struck and killed by another driver.
“As the green Dodge Charger returns to the southbound lanes, aggressive braking and engine deceleration are immediately followed by a crash that can be heard on surveillance footage,” the video’s narrator explains.
In a January affidavit, Lacy was accused of traveling at “an extremely high rate of speed in a posted 40 mph speed zone.” When Lacy attempted to pass an 18-wheel truck with a trailer, Lacy’s vehicle allegedly “rapidly approached a northbound pick-up truck.”
After the pick-up truck pulled over to the side of the road, the driver behind steered to avoid a crash “with the rapidly approaching” Dodge Charger, driven by Lacy.
The pick-up truck collided with Hall’s vehicle, ultimately killing the 78-year-old man.
“While we recognize that external narratives may arise, often based on selective information, we urge the public to rely on the full body of facts,” said Col. Robert P. Hodges, superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, said on Tuesday.
Earlier this month, Ory, Lacy’s attorney, presented security footage from a nearby gas station that showed Lacy’s car about 70 yards behind the vehicles that were involved in the accident.
“Kyren Lacy did in fact pass four cars, there’s no disputing that,” Ory said during an interview with HTV 10. “However, he was back in his lane of travel 92.3 yards behind Mr. Hall. At the time of impact, he’s 72.6 yards behind the vehicles at the time of impact … That is not how this story was ever painted, never.”
The evidence presented by Ory caused many to look at the case differently, including Lacy’s former LSU teammate, Sai’Vion Jones.
“They slander your name, your character, and painted you as the bad guy,” Jones wrote via X account on Friday. “But we your family, teammates, and friends know the real you LLK2.”
