A wedding proposal is supposed to be the most intimate moment of your life but a viral video has exposed the transactional nature of the gesture at one of the world’s most romantic locations.

A clip posted to TikTok reveals several proposal ‘spots’ within meters of each other along the Seine in Paris, featuring variations of giant heart-shaped floral arrangements, huge “Marry Me” signs covered in light bulbs and red carpets surrounded by candles.

The video, taken at night time, shows no less than five different proposals all taking place at the same time, with spotlights shining down on each couple.

Not to mention the tourists taking photos of strangers’ proposals from the balcony above – all while locals continue to go about their lives, heading home from work or out for dinner with friends.

It would be the equivalent of witnessing a similar scene in Sydney’s Circular Quay. Imagine a procession of proposals while trying to capture the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House in the background.

The not-so-romantic scene at Paris’ famous river was described by the original poster as their “biggest fear”.

YouGov UK, a survey platform, revealed that just five percent of people were open to a public proposal. A whopping 67% preferred their proposal take place in private.

Nine percent had no idea what they wanted and 18 percent said they wouldn’t want a marriage proposal of any kind.

Social media users weren’t shy about their thoughts and feelings on the viral clip.

“The only public proposal I‘ll accept is at a lantern festival,” one social media user commented.

Another said: “Biggest fear ever.”

“This feels so SHEIN,” one declared.

Another wrote: “I only want the proposal to be at the exact place where I met him.”

“Imagine seeing like the one next you has way better decoration,” one commented.

One said: “They commercialized proposals.”

“I was proposed to in Paris except at a really beautiful Japanese garden. So much more personal and intimate,” another declared.

One commented: “As a Paris obsessed girly I have zero regrets and nobody can change my mind.”

“May this love never find me,” another wrote.

One commented: “It feels so unnatural.”

“Are those sets up always there and people can just come by and pay to use it to propose,” one person asked.

Another said: “It’s the McDonald’s of proposals lol.”

“I wouldn’t mind a public proposal just NOT THIS KIND,” weighed in someone else.
