Reason 3,805,083 why Mayor Bill de Blasio is the worst: a damning new Department of Investigation report slamming his abuse of his NYPD security detail for his own political and personal purposes.
The DOI says he owes the city $319,794 for what the NYPD spent on such frivolity, notably having the detail along on his hopeless vanity presidential run, including taking in a Red Sox game in California.
Meanwhile, the guy who infamously warned his son to fear cops allowed the kids to treat detectives as a “concierge service,” in the words of de Blasio’s handpicked DOI commissioner, Margaret Garnett, chauffeuring Dante not only to Yale but every weekday morning from the Upper East Side to his job in Brooklyn and moving daughter Chiara from Brooklyn into Gracie Mansion.
The 49-page report also notes that de Blasio had the detail drive his brother from the airport to pick up a Zipcar in Palmyra, NJ, as well as “to an Alamo rental car location without the mayor present.”
Plus, the DOI says the NYPD inspector heading up de Blasio’s security detail “actively obstructed and sought to thwart” the investigation; Inspector Howard Redmond could face criminal charges.
Meanwhile, de Blasio still owes $300,000 for the legal fees he ran up while facing probes into his pay-to-play political fundraising.
Looks like Hizzoner is going to have to get a real job come Jan. 1.
