A bloodthirsty gangbanger slashed two Rikers Island correction officers in a gruesome ceramic scalpel attack — bringing his behind-bars trail of victims to more than 50 people, union leaders said Thursday.
Sickening photos showed where inmate Sundance Oliver — a 30-year-old accused killer and “one-man crime wave” since he was pre-teen — allegedly slashed one officer’s scalp and another’s face on Wednesday, officials said.
The attack unfolded after Oliver started a fire in his cell in Rikers’ North Infirmary Command, where inmates in involuntary protective custody are housed, around 4:10 p.m., Department of Correction officials said.
The two correction officers had been working to evacuate the smoke-filled housing unit when Oliver pounced with a ceramic scalpel, officials and union leaders said.
“Without any provocation, the inmate suddenly began slashing our officers across their heads and faces in what was the most violent assault on our members in years,” Benny Boscio, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association union, said in a statement.
“This is the same inmate who has now attacked over 50 officers and civilians at Rikers in a span of just two years. These two officers are literally lucky to be alive.”
One officer needed 17 stitches for a deep gash across his scalp, while another required seven for a laceration on his face, Boscio said.
Oliver has long been an alleged dangerous menace, both behind bars and out in the city.
He began running with gangs, notably Brooklyn’s Loop Gang, when he was just 12, sources had told The Post.
Over the years, Oliver racked up a long rap sheet that included a robbery conviction and a slew of other arrests, including attempted murder.
The destructive life of crime allegedly led to sick shooting spree across Brooklyn and Manhattan in 2022 that left two people dead and wounded a 96-year-old bystander in a wheelchair.
Oliver was hauled off to Rikers Island on murder charges, but his alleged violence didn’t stop there.
He committed more than 40 assaults on staff, three attempts at arson, use of weapons and other infractions behind bars, correction officials said.
Union officials raised alarms about Oliver in February, detailing one incident in which he allegedly used a chain to choke one woman officer before brutally beating another.
Correction officials pledged to work with prosecutors to make sure Oliver faces the “fullest extent of the law” for the latest alleged attack.
“These officers courageously responded to a fire in a cell that put the lives of everyone at risk,” a spokesperson said. “As our officers brought the situation under control, two suffered serious injuries at the hands of someone who has a long history of problematic behavior.”
Boscio also blasted Zohran Mamdani, who plans to empty Rikers Island of inmates. He demanded that Mamdani say what he’ll do with inmates such as Oliver.
Mamdani’s campaign declined to comment.
