No soup for you!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a public health alert for a variety of packaged soup and bowl products.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued the warning for 13 products that may be contaminated with a foreign material — specifically wood — in the cilantro.

The problem was discovered when the FSIS was notified that the cilantro, an ingredient regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, was recalled for foreign material.

Products affected are mostly frozen soups and food bowls under the brands of Campbell’s, Molly’s Kitchen, Healthy Request, Sysco, Vital Pursuit and Crafted Market by Meijer.

A public health alert is different from a recall. Recalls involve a company pulling its product off the shelves over safety concerns. Public health alerts are issued to “inform the public about potential health risks in cases where a recall cannot be recommended,” according to the USDA.

While the FSIS has not issued a recall for these products, the agency is concerned that they may be in consumers’ and institutional refrigerators or freezers and warned customers not to consume or serve them.

The foods were distributed to institutional and retail locations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.

However, the FSIS expects that more products were likely impacted, which could result in nationwide impacts.

The USDA plans to update consumers when more information becomes available. People can continue to check the USDA website for additional products included in the recall.

At this time, most products affected have the establishment numbers: P-17644, 17644B, or CA-711. Label images are available on the FSIS website.
