Heartfelt praise from British comedian Miranda Hart brought Selena Gomez to tears.

While appearing on the Friday, October 11, episode of The Graham Norton Show, Hart, 51, shared how Gomez’s documentary My Mind & Me inspired her to write about her own journey with chronic illness in her latest book, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You.

“It’s extraordinary that I’m on the show with Selena,” Hart shared. “It makes me quite emotional.” (Hart appeared on the talk show alongside Gomez, 32, Ncuti Gatwa and Zoe Saldaña.)

“When I saw your documentary on Apple about your illness struggles, I was thinking, ‘Do I share? Is this something I should do?’” Hart told Gomez. “Because it feels quite vulnerable sharing, it’s not something I’ve done before. And I watched your documentary and I just thought, ‘Absolutely yes,’ and that’s what kept me writing.”

At this point, Gomez teared up and became visibly emotional, reaching forward to take Hart’s hand and thank her.

“So, the fact I’m on this show with you, honestly, I’m so — on film as well, to witness somebody in the pain I was in, for different conditions but we, you know, we know what a chronic condition is like,” Hart continued. “It’s always rumbling there. I know what it’s like — in a very different way. You know, I wasn’t in arenas as a pop star, but I was backstage at the BBC trying to go on, not knowing whether to go on.”

Hart concluded the heartfelt moment by saying, “It’s amazing Selena’s here and I think she’s incredible,” before she joked, “Now, back to me.”

My Mind & Me released on Apple TV+ in November 2022. It follows Gomez throughout six years of her career, documenting her health struggles following a diagnosis of lupus and bipolar disorder. (Gomez was diagnosed with lupus in 2013, undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018.)

Hart’s book, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You, was published on Thursday, October 10. Per the official summary, the book is “packed with hard-won wisdoms and gentle truths” as Hart takes the reader on a “journey from illness to recovery.”

Gomez has previously been open about her health challenges. While speaking at a women in film dinner last month, the actress shared that she wasn’t ashamed of her bipolar disorder or that she is unable to carry a child.

“I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need help and you want help,” she said in September. “That is not shameful. So, yeah, I shared that I can’t carry a child. Yeah, I shared that I have bipolar [disorder]. F— off.” She added that she wants to use her platform to uplift other women as well.

“I only want to be an advocate for women and that’s why I share,” she continued. “That’s why I like to be honest, because everybody is going through something. I’m me and that’s all I can be.”
