A South Carolina man was shot and killed after he accidentally set off a shotgun booby trap last Monday that was allegedly built by a family member.
Jordan Dove, 34, was gravely wounded after he was struck by a shotgun blast after arriving at his incarcerated uncle’s vacant home in Saint Matthews, SC, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
He was transported to a nearby hospital but eventually succumbed to his injury late Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.
“It was believed at the time, the residence may have been booby trapped,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
“A perimeter was set around the residence as deputies slowly made entry into the home where they encountered a shotgun that was rigged at the back door to go off once anyone attempted to gain entry. A further sweep of the residence showed the front door was barricaded shut with no other occupants inside.”
Authorities are working to pin murder charges on Alfonzo Brown, the owner of the home and Dove’s uncle who is currently behind bars in Maryland for an unrelated, nonfatal shooting in January.
Because he is jailed, they also want to add possession of a weapon by a convicted felon charge. More charges may be also tacked on, Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers told WIS.

The sheriff’s department believes that the house was booby-trapped with the intent of harming law enforcement officers. It is unclear how long ago the trap was set up.
“This was a very dangerous situation that appeared targeted at law enforcement. It is yet another example of the dangers faced by law enforcement everyday,” Summers said in a statement last Tuesday.
The sheriff’s office added on Thursday that there was no additional information following the conclusion of the investigation, but assured that there is no current threat to the public.
