Teddi Mellencamp didn’t directly address the news about her past affair — but she did share a cryptic quote amid the headlines.
“When you’re being pushed into the shadows always find your light,” Mellencamp, 43, captioned an Instagram photo on Wednesday, November 13, of herself posing for the camera.
The social media upload came shortly after news broke about her former romance with horse trainer Simon Schroeder, which happened months before she separated from now-estranged husband Edwin Arroyave.
Us Weekly confirmed that Arroyave, 47, found out after he spoke with Schroeder’s wife, Karli. A second source revealed that Mellencamp and Arroyave tried to make their marriage work before ultimately calling it quits.
“Simon and Teddi had a thing several months ago but it’s not still happening,” a source exclusively told Us before noting that Arroyave was also unfaithful during his marriage to Mellencamp. “Teddi and Edwin had been working on the problems of their marriage, despite his past indiscretions.”
The insider added: “Teddi isn’t excusing her behavior but this was the first and only time she strayed outside of the marriage and says there’s two sides to the story. They are both to blame.”
Earlier this month, Mellencamp announced her split from Arroyave after 13 years of marriage.
“After a great deal of care and consideration, I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce,” Mellencamp wrote via Instagram at the time. “My priority is my children and ensuring that every care is taken with their privacy and wellbeing throughout this new chapter.”
Mellencamp, who shares daughters Slate, 12, and Dove, 4, and son Cruz, 10, with Arroyave, admitted she didn’t want to publicly address the breakup, adding, “Making a public statement is not something I wanted to do, but in an effort to protect my family from undue speculation and rumors, I felt being open, honest and vulnerable was the best path forward.”
The reality star has since filed for divorce. She listed October 20 as their separation date and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce, according to documents obtained by Us.
Arroyave, for his part, previously showed support for Mellencamp when they attended an event together in late October.
“I always say life and pain are inseparable,” he wrote via Instagram after attending the Cure Melanoma Gala with his estranged wife, who has battled skin cancer. “And to see @teddimellencamp embrace her pain and use it for the greater good again last night as she emceed the @curemelanoma gala, was a beautiful reminder of what she is capable of. Her story has already saved lives. And I couldn’t be prouder that she will continue to save more.”
