Tony DeAngelo traded to Flyers year after dramatic Rangers split

MONTREAL – Former controversial Rangers defenseman Tony DeAngelo is on the move once again.

The Hurricanes, who signed DeAngelo to a one-year deal last July after the Rangers bought out the remainder of his contract following a slew of missteps away from the ice, traded the offensive-minded defenseman and a 2022 seventh-round pick to the Flyers on Friday. Carolina received a 2022 fourth-round pick, which they used to take defenseman Simon Forsmark at No. 101, as well as a third-rounder in 2023 and a fourth-rounder in 2024 from the Flyers.

DeAngelo, a pending restricted free agent, subsequently signed a two-year, $10 million deal with Philadelphia. The 26-year-old blueliner, who grew up about 20 miles away from Philadelphia in Washington Township, New Jersey, is essentially headed home to play under former Rangers coach John Tortorella.

“We’re very happy to add Tony to our team and I know he is very excited to join the Flyers,” Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said in a news release. “We did our due diligence and we strongly believe in Tony and his ability to help our team. He is a right-handed shot who moves the puck extremely well and will drive offense from the back end for us.”

After scoring 10 goals and dishing 41 assists in 64 games with the Canes, DeAngelo is onto his fourth NHL team since he entered the league in 2016-17 with the Coyotes. DeAngelo skated in 167 games with the Rangers, collecting 19 goals and 73 assists, but his off-ice antics led to him getting put on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout on July 28, 2021.
