Steak, chicken and fish are off the table at this plant-based party.
A bride took to Reddit after a fallout with her parents over her decision to make her wedding menu meat-free.
She explained that she and her fiancé are getting married on October 31, 2026 — a spooky affair on multiple fronts if you’re a meat-eating guest — and given they’re both dedicated vegetarians, they decided to plan the menu around their diet.
“My parents think it’s selfish not to serve meat and even threatened to not come if there is no meat to eat,” she detailed. Apparently, her parents also told her her friends and other relatives may be “disappointed” by the menu choice as well, and she should expect people to leave early as a result.
Taking this into account, the bride also added that she may alter the menu slightly, but hadn’t made up her mind yet.
“We might make an exception on some locally sourced fish.”
“I really don’t want to serve any meat as it’s again my values and the thought makes me uncomfortable,” she maintained.
With experience cooking for large groups, she also said she was planning to cook samosas, spring rolls, savoury cakes, verrines and club sandwiches, among other things.
Though this plant-based bride was surprised at her loved one’s lack of enthusiasm for her menu, many commenters set her straight with alternative perspectives and offered advice — both for her seemingly unpopular vegetarian fare and her over-the-top catering plans.
Though some were reassuring when it came to the menu, they were also extraordinarily wary of her plans to cook for 40, all while juggling the other elements of hosting a wedding.
Others were suspicious of the affair all around.
“It’s definitely ok, but make sure to include some simple things and ‘crowd pleasers,’” advised someone. “Avoid everything being mushroom-based and avoid lots of fake meat.”
“I think it’s rude/selfish to only serve one type of food AND make the food. Unless you are culinarily trained, I wouldn’t do this. Your guests are also spending money and are a part of your experience. Giving them food they’ll enjoy should be a minimum,” wrote one commenter, agreeing with her parents.
Opting for a fully plant-based meal service at weddings appears to be a growing trend among vegan and vegetarian couples.
“We managed to reflect our core beliefs and lifestyle onto the wedding through our choices of food, dresses, decorations, etc.,” Diogo Linhares told South West News Service after his zero-waste wedding went viral back in 2022.
Linhares and his bride also opted for an herbivore-friendly menu, and even threw bird seed and heart-shaped leaves as confetti.
