The Runarounds featured several blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos from Outer Banks stars — but did you notice them all?
Prime Video released season 1 on Monday, September 1, which reintroduced the real-life band that originally made an appearance in a past season of Outer Banks. Despite technically existing in the same universe, J. Anthony Crane and Cullen Moss made brief appearances in different roles from the characters they currently play on Outer Banks.
The Runarounds’ William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock and Jesse Golliher spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about where their season 3 Outer Banks appearance fit into the timeline of events.
“I think [our band] were just established enough to get a wedding anniversary gig on Outer Banks,” Ellis said about their scene in the hit Netflix series. “They were still a high school band kind of learning the ropes. They probably messed up a thing or two with that.”
Murdock told Us that the brief crossover was “not meant to be taken super seriously,” adding, “That was more for us in real life to go off the creation. That doesn’t have much to do with the universe.”
According to Ellis, the Outer Banks cast has shown their support for The Runarounds before season 1 premiered.
“The time we met we played a bunch of music together,” Ellis recalled. “But we also tried to act out some scenes. Thankfully we had Mr. Chase Stokes there with us just really coaching us.”
He continued: “It was our first time ever trying acting really. So he was awesome and had he not been there, I don’t know if I would be here.”
Based on a teleplay from Outer Banks cocreator Jonas Pate and David Wilcox, the fictional series follows the real band of the same name.
“When we first met with Jonas and Skydance about The Runarounds, it was immediately clear that they brought us a special show featuring an incredibly talented cast and real-life band,” Vernon Sanders, the head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, shared in a February 2024 statement. “We are very much looking forward to sharing the exhilarating journey of The Runarounds with our global Prime Video customers.”
Lipton, Ellis, Yun, Murdock and Golliher formed the band in 2021 when Pate released a casting call for a group to appear on Outer Banks. The Runarounds was chosen out of 5,000 musicians who responded. The episode was filmed in 2022, as The Runarounds recorded an EP and went on tour. In addition to the musical group,
The Runarounds also stars Brooklyn Decker, Maximo Salas, Marley Aliah, Hayes MacArthur, Mark Wystrach, Shea Pritchard, Lilah Pate and Kelley Pereira.
Outer Banks is currently streaming on Netflix while The Runarounds is out on Prime Video.
