The New York Giants have a new fan favorite in their backfield and his name is Cam Skattebo.
Skattebo hails from Rio Linda, California, and was drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round (105th overall) of the 2025 NFL Draft from Arizona State. Known for his bruising style and fearless attitude, Skattebo has quickly turned heads in New York.
The running back has earned attention across the league for his powerful stride, no-nonsense attitude and confidence that borders on fearlessness.
Here are five things to know about the Giants’ rising rookie:
1. He Dominated High School Sports in California
Born in a small town in February 2002, Skattebo started as a dual-sport athlete, playing both baseball and football at Rio Lindo High School.
As a baseball player, he had a .342 career average and hit eight home runs across his junior and sophomore seasons.
But his true calling was football. When he became the starting running back in 2018-19, he rushed for an eye-popping 3,550 yards and 42 touchdowns as a junior and helped his team win the state championship.
That season earned him Sacramento Bee’s 2018 Offensive Player of the Year and got him a Division 1 scholarship to play football at Sacramento State in 2020. He finished his high-school career with over 7,000 yards and scored nearly 100 total touchdowns.
2. His Path to the NFL Was All About Grit
Skattebo’s journey to the NFL is straight out of a movie. He starred at Sacramento State before transferring to Arizona State in 2023, where he became one of the most versatile backs in college football.
At ASU, he led the team in rushing yards, receptions and touchdowns, and made headlines for his confidence.
“They continue to keep saying that people are going to try to stop me,” Skattebo said during the 2024 Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl media day. “There’s nobody out there that can stop me. We played in 13 games, and I’ve been the target on each one, so I’m not too worried. We’re going to play our game and play ball and see what happens.”
That belief helped him stand out even on the struggling Sun Devils teams. When asked how he prepares for elite defenses, he told Sports Illustrated in 2023. “If they’re studying hard, there’s a reason. I have full respect for them because they understand what they’re playing against, and that’s why I love playing in games like this, because they constantly look at me as a threat, and that’s something I’ve always wanted to be.”
3. He Plays Angry and Loves It
At 5-foot10 and 220 pounds, Skattebo’s bruising, low-centered running style has drawn comparisons to former NFL Pro-Bowl running back Marshawn Lynch. He prides himself on running through people, not around them. After scoring three touchdowns in Arizona State’s season finale, he let his real feelings be heard.
“Nobody respects the fact that I’m the best running back in the country,” he told SI.com after the Big 12 Championship in 2024. “I am going to stand on that. If people want to disrespect that, I am going to keep going and I am going to keep proving people wrong.”
Giants quarterback and fellow rookie Jaxson Dart said something similar after the team’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles in October 2025, during which Skattebo scored three touchdowns.
“I mean, he’s crazy, bro. He’s crazy,” Dart said. “But he’s a baller, man. Us coming in here, we’re really just trying to change the culture of intensity. He played his ass off tonight. I love him.”
4. He’s Already a Locker-Room Favorite in New York
Skattebo’s humor and authenticity have made him a hit with teammates. After their win over the Eagles, Skattebo joined Dart on the Amazon Prime post-game desk and proceeded to rip his shirt off alongside former NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. This prompted huge roars from the Giants faithful along with chants of “Skatt-e-bo!”
Another hilarious moment happened during Giants head coach Brian Daboll’s press conference in September 2025.
As Daboll was trying to answer a question about the team’s home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, he was loudly interrupted by Skattebo screaming as he came off the field from practice.
“Sorry, Skattebo,” Daboll said as if this type of interaction was a daily occurrence. “Can you repeat [that question], please. He’s pretty much like that all the time.”
If you haven’t heard about him, there is a good chance you will eventually “hear” him.
5. Off the Field, He’s All About Family and Fishing
While he plays like a battering ram on Sundays, Skattebo’s life away from football is calm and simple.
He has remained close with his family, a bond that is represented by the number he wears on the field: 44.
“Obviously I wanted No. 4, but it’s retired,” Skattebo told Kay Adams in an interview with Panini America. “My brother wore No. 44 in high school and growing up, and I’ve worn it a couple times in the past, so it’s kind of a family number, a generational thing for me and my family. I wear one ‘4’ for me and one ‘4’ for him.”
His mother, Becky Skattebo, wrapped it up perfectly when talking to ABC15 Arizona in January about what it was like to raise him.
“We bought every car seat on the market and he wouldn’t stay in it,” she said. “He started walking at 7 months old. His balance has been there from Day 1 and he figured it out. Been running ever since.”
