Zoë Kravitz is a self-proclaimed Sex and the City fan, but that doesn’t mean she tuned into its multiple spinoffs.

“In your first lie detector test, you proved you’re a huge fan of Sex and the City,” Kravitz’s Caught Stealing costar Austin Butler began in a Thursday, August 28, interview for Vanity Fair. “Be honest: Which was the better spinoff? The Carrie Diaries or [And] Just Like That?

Kravitz, 36, quickly responded, “Neither, leave that show alone. Everybody, just stop.”

What Kravitz wasn’t aware of is that Butler, 34, portrayed Sebastian Kidd on The Carrie Diaries, which chronicled Carrie Bradshaw’s high school life in Connecticut long before moving to New York City to work as a sex columnist. AnnaSophia Robb played the titular character, taking over Sarah Jessica Parker’s role. Sebastian was Carrie’s on-off boyfriend on the two-season CW show.

“Then, I’m gonna throw this guy out, and this guy,” Butler quipped in the Thursday interview, tossing a pair of images behind him. “[It] was two pictures of me. Yeah, I was in The Carrie Diaries. Did you know that?”

“Oops,” Kravitz quipped.

While the Big Little Lies alum might not have knowledge of The Carrie Diaries, Butler still holds the production close to his heart.

“I have so many fond memories of that time because that was when I first moved to New York,” he said on Variety’s “Award Circuit” podcast in February 2023. “I never lived in New York before and I was able to move to New York for two years and make that show. It was that and getting to be around AnnaSophia, everybody in that show, [they were] just so fun to be around, even just going back and watching Sex and the City.”

The Academy Award nominee added, “I remember having an apartment in New York, I’d take a bath and I’d pop on Sex and the City. I was like a middle-aged woman [with] a glass of wine [and] always candles.”

Long before AnnaSophia Robb kept Us guessing on NBC’s Grosse Pointe Garden Society, she stepped into Carrie Bradshaw’s oh-so-fashionable shoes. From 2013 to 2014, The CW aired a two-season Sex in the City prequel chronicling Carrie’s high school years in Castlebury, Connecticut. The Carrie Diaries, inspired by Candace Bushnell’s SATC novels, was also adapted from […]

The feeling is mutual for Robb, now 31, who previously sang Butler’s praises in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly.

I’m so proud of him. I am just so thrilled for him,” she told Us in 2022 after Butler’s portrayal of Elvis Presley landed an Oscar nomination. “He’s such a dedicated, focused actor and a kind person. So [he deserves] all the accolades.”

Robb further noted that she knew Butler “was going to be a movie star” when they first met.

“You don’t have a face like that and not be a movie star,” she added. “But he also, he has the intelligence and the dedication and the kindness to really [shine]. He’s perfect for [the role of Elvis], but he’s perfect not just because he looks [like him], he embodied him. I mean he spent two years of his life studying the man and getting into his bones.”
