Festive Christmas markets nationwide are skipping right past Thanksgiving, throwing open their doors as holiday shoppers rush to snag unique gifts and dig into viral seasonal treats early.
Strolling through these winter wonderlands has turned into a cherished holiday tradition — and the internet’s favorite spots are taking social media by storm.
According to a new study, one iconic market reigns supreme, racking up more online search interest than its next three closest competitors combined — and it’s right in the heart of NYC.
Online platform Mahjong 4 Friends analyzed nationwide search volume for popular Christmas markets to reveal which festive hotspots are the most popular and generate the biggest online buzz.
Unsurprisingly, New York City’s Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park captured the No. 1 spot. The Manhattan mainstay draws a staggering average of 165,232 searches per month — more than double the volume of any other Christmas market in the country.
The winter village is famous for its admission-free ice-skating rink and cozy holiday shops. And the 35 dedicated food vendors have also sparked a massive “Bryant Park food tour” trend on TikTok, with content creators already flooding social feeds with videos showing off their food crawls.
One viral creator dropped nearly $200 on bites alone, trying fan favorites like Gnocchi on 9th and Birria Les for their loaded birria grilled cheese.
The Bryant Park Winter Village officially opened for the 2026–2027 season on Oct. 28, 2026, and will stay open to holiday visitors through Jan. 3, 2027.
Chicago’s Christkindlmarket locked down second place with 70,681 monthly searches. Nestled in downtown Chicago, its traditional Bavarian-style food stalls and artisan gift booths make it a go-to holiday staple.
The German-inspired market features events like German history tours and appearances by Krampus, Saint Nick’s menacing counterpart in German folklore.
Philadelphia’s Christmas Village and Denver’s Christkindlmarket came in next, pulling in 41,453 and 38,388 average monthly searches, respectively.
Philly’s open-air market sets up shop at LOVE Park and City Hall, serving classic European eats like bratwurst and schnitzel alongside hot mulled wine (Glühwein) in collectible souvenir mugs.
Denver’s setup also serves up heavy German inspiration, complete with wooden artisan huts, a 42-foot-tall carousel, and interactive glass ornament-making workshops.
The Seattle Christmas Market rounds out the top five with 31,850 average monthly searches for its European-style stalls and handcrafted goods set right under the iconic Space Needle at Seattle Center.
Washington, DC’s Downtown Holiday Market landed at No. 6 with 29,730 monthly searches — roughly a fifth of NYC’s top-ranked market. The DC attraction spans two locations: Penn Quarter and Dupont Circle.
The main DowntownDC market boasts over 120 rotating and permanent local makers, artists, and boutique vendors, while the Dupont Circle location adds more than 35 artisanal stalls.
“What really drives these searches is that sense of tradition and nostalgia,” Mahjong 4 Friends president Neal Taparia said he found in his research. “Five of the top ten markets use that German-style branding, which suggests the European heritage angle is a real draw for American audiences.”
