Anna Faris responded to Chuck Lorre’s dig about her casting on Mom, sharing how the remarks affected her.
The actress clapped back via Instagram on Thursday, October 15 after Lorre, 73, wrote about his “initial reluctance” to cast Faris in Mom in his newly released book, Sitcom: A Memoir.
“Yikes. Yes. I read a few things. I really didn’t see that coming. Of course it hurts,” Faris, 49, wrote. “Chuck gave me a job I loved, and for seven years I never took a day of it for granted. I’m proud of what we made together, and nothing changes how grateful I am for those people and those years.”
Faris, who portrayed recovering alcoholic and single mother Christy Plunkett on the show from 2013 to 2020, also shared an update on her personal sobriety journey in the post.
“I’ve been sober for a year and a half. I was on a show about recovery and then I lived it,” she wrote. Now I’m healthy, I’m working, and I’m happier than I’ve ever been in a long time. If anyone reading this is where I was, I hope that’s useful. It gets better. I’m proof.”
Faris had the support of some famous faces in the comments section, including Justin Long, who guest-starred in several episodes.
“I loved doing those episodes with you. You really helped me navigate what was a very different medium for me with patience and so much humor. It will forever be such a fun memory, thanks to you. I miss you❤️.” Long, 48, wrote.
Meanwhile, Isla Fisher, 50, chimed in with, “You are a comedy QUEEN ❤️.”
Us reached out to Lorre’s representative for comment.
In his book, Lorre admitted he was hesitant about Faris’ suitability for the sitcom’s lead role, given her personal issues.
“I initially said no. I wasn’t sure Anna would be appropriate for this kind of material,” the showrunner wrote in the book.
According to Lorre, who is also the co-creator of Two and A Half Men, he ultimately changed his tune after considering his strained dynamic with that sitcom’s star, Charlie Sheen, who also struggled in his personal life.
“Then I thought about how badly I’d bungled my working relationship with Charlie Sheen,” Lorre explained. “Someone’s personal life is none of my business. The mom in Mom would be, and should be, Anna Faris.”
In September 2020, Faris announced her exit from Mom.
“The past seven years on ‘Mom’ have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career. I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience,” Faris said at the time. “While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”
Lorre referenced Faris’ departure in his book, which he used as evidence he had been right all along to be hesitant.
“As the years went by, it became apparent that my initial reluctance to hire Anna was, in fact, correct,” he wrote. “After six years, she left the show for mysterious reasons that were not mysterious to anyone on the show.”
