Austin Butler admitted that he ate a marijuana edible shortly before he joined Caught Stealing costar Bad Bunny on stage at a recent concert.
“Somebody gave me an edible right before the show,” the Elvis star, 33, recalled during his Tuesday, August 12, appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “I thought that was a good idea at the time … I don’t really like [attention]. I’m in an ironic job because I don’t really like people singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me.”
Butler made a surprise appearance at Bad Bunny’s (real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí concert residency in Puerto Rico earlier this month. Viral footage showed Butler with his arms crossed and hesitantly swaying on a side stage where Bad Bunny, 31, performed. (“No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí” translates from Spanish to English as “I Don’t Want to Leave Here.”)
Speaking to host Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, Butler explained that he initially had no idea that the side platform where he was standing was actually one of Bad Bunny’s stages.
“So, suddenly I’m on stage with Bad Bunny,” Austin remembered. “And the edible is working. It was wild! So it’s like my brain is in two movies. One is like, ‘Benito and I had lunch earlier in the day, I’m just like, so proud of him.’”
He went on, “I’m watching him going like, ‘Oh my god, look how much you mean to everyone here.’ I’m like, falling in love with Puerto Rican culture and the dancing, and everybody is so sexy and amazing.”
Butler revealed that he was desperately wanting to dance along with the “Baile Inolvidable” singer without drawing too much attention to himself.
“Part of me is like, ‘Don’t dance, because you’ll take attention away from him. This is his moment,’” the actor said. “So I’m like, ‘hide,’ my body is saying ‘hide,’ but then the music is so good and it’s like in my bones at that point.”
Butler then quipped, “I’m like, wanting to dance. But then the other voice inside is saying, ‘Don’t take attention away,’ so I ended up just swaying my hips while crossing my arms … For whatever reason every time I uncrossed my arms I felt like I was drawing attention to myself.”
When Fallon suggested Butler’s strategy to stay casual failed since the footage went viral, the Dune: Part Two star admitted to feeling conflicted because he didn’t want to look like the infamous “sad Ben Affleck memes.”
“I don’t want to be the sad guy,” Butler teased. “But you also don’t want to be the guy who’s, like, dancing crazy and drawing attention!”
The Oscar-nominated star was far from the only famous face to appear at one of Bad Bunny’s homecoming residency shows, as Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, LeBron James and Ricky Martin have all checked out concerts since the July 11 launch at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum.
Bad Bunny announced his No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí residency in January as a way to thank fans in Puerto Rico for supporting his sixth studio album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos. (The album title translates to English as I Should Have Taken More Photos).
“I’m in Puerto Rico, I’m home, having fun and, to be honest, I don’t want to leave,” he announced on January 13. “Thanks to music and the love you give me through my music, I’ve had the privilege of traveling to sing in different places of the world. I appreciate and love to do it. There are places I for sure will return … and some I’ve never been to but would like to visit, like Brazil and Japan. And there are places I haven’t been to in a long time, like Italy, London, Spain.”
Bad Bunny’s 30-show No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí residency continues at José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan through September 14, before he sets off on the Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour in Santo Domingo on November 21.
