Bachelor in Paradise’s Joe Amabile is sharing an update on his health one week after undergoing brain surgery, revealing his diagnosis and treatment plan going forward.
“Recovery has been better than even I expected and I’m a pretty positive person,” Joe, 40, captioned an Instagram post on Wednesday, August 12. “A big thank you to Dr. Golfinos and his team @nyulangone. They really have been wonderful.”
The reality star went on to thank fans and friends for sending well-wishes, adding, “I know a lot of you have reached out with so much love and support and it means a lot. If I haven’t got back to you it’s not because I didn’t see it, it’s because I don’t like you. Lol jk. I love you guys, I’ve just been very overwhelmed and focused on rest/recovery but the support means so much.”
Joe shared more details in the accompanying video, noting, “I do have an astrocytoma, but it’s very low grade.” (Astrocytoma is a type of brain tumor or spinal cord tumor, according to Mayo Clinic. It starts in cells called astrocytes and may result in headaches, seizures, nausea or changes in mood or behavior.)
“They did get the whole thing,” he shared. “When it comes to malignant brain tumors, they don’t know what’s left over, so I will be going on treatment, which is just a pill every day for the rest of my life to put the bad cells to sleep and hopefully they stay asleep.”
Joe initially revealed on July 13 that he would be undergoing the intense procedure after doctors discovered a “lesion” in his brain.
“So a little medical update. I didn’t share my Prenuvo results because they ended up finding a lesion in my brain so then I had to go get a brain MRI and there was a blueberry size lesion in my brain that looks to be a glioma, which is a tumor. So I now need to get brain surgery next week to get it removed and get it tested,” Joe said at the time, adding text over the clip, “(Surgery is in two weeks … my bad).”
He continued, “And then we’re going to go from there. So it’s been a wild couple weeks. I definitely wasn’t expecting this. I think it’s one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, something like this will never happen to me.’ And here I am.”
Joe shared that he was told “it’s really early stages” and hoped they were “able to get it all.”
“This past month has been a lot of ups and downs to say the least. After multiple scans and MRIs I have what looks to be an early stage brain tumor. In two weeks I’ll be undergoing a craniotomy to have it removed — yeah brain surgery — @memorialsloankettering,” he captioned the clip. “I’m doing my best to stay positive during this time and am lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends.”
He continued, “I’ve gone back and forth about what I wanted to share on social media but ultimately this is now part of my life now, so might as well. Onto a new journey.”
Joe’s wife, Serena Pitt, went on to express her appreciation for all of the support the couple have received amid his health journey. (Joe and Serena tied the knot in 2022 after meeting on BiP season 7.)
“Thank you all so much for the love and support you have sent our way!” she wrote via Instagram on July 14. “Finding out that Joe has a brain tumor has come with so many emotions. It has felt very scary, overwhelming and heavy at times. We feel so blessed to have an amazing community who is supporting us and helping us hold onto a positive mindset throughout all of this! I truly believe Joe is going to get through this, and no matter what happens we’re going to face it together 🤍.”
While sharing a black-and-white photo of the twosome enjoying a s’mores, she added, “(This photo is from this past weekend which was filled with endless, much needed laughs).”
