Coastal storm impacts millions along Eastern Seaboard with heavy rain, rough seas

Millions of people along the waterlogged Interstate 95 corridor on the East Coast are bracing for another round of rain from a storm system moving up the Eastern Seaboard, including in Baltimore, where operations are ongoing after a catastrophic bridge collapse early Tuesday morning.

Many cities along the East Coast, including Providence in Rhode Island, Hartford in Connecticut, New York City and Philadelphia, are already experiencing one of their five wettest years to date.

Their next round of heavy rain is expected to continue through Thursday as a cold front approaches from the west.

The FOX Forecast Center said a strengthening low will pull in moisture directly from the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in moderate to heavy rain from the Carolinas to New England.

Forecast models show the position of the front and low-pressure system will keep the heaviest rain across North Carolina, Virginia and parts of eastern New England, where portions of Maine could see upwards of 3-5 inches of rain.

Far lower amounts of a half-inch to an inch of rain are expected for the highly populated I-95 corridor from Washington and Baltimore through Philadelphia and New York City.

And that’s good news for those areas as they picked up record rainfall amounts last weekend.

The ground remains extremely saturated, so it wouldn’t take much rain to lead to more flooding.

Snow also expected

The FOX Forecast Center said that as the low deepens in the Gulf of Maine on Friday, a surge of cold air on the backside of the storm may allow for the precipitation to change over from rain to heavy, wet snow across portions of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

The FOX Forecast Center isn’t expecting epic snowfall totals from this storm.

However, northern portions of Maine could see 5-8 inches of snow by the time the storm winds down.
